Washington assigns General Funston authority to expand American lines to Vera Cruz as needed. Fortifications will rise, and he may act with broad discretion. No definite movement details from Mexican troops given yet.
Three South American mediators in the Mexican dispute will meet at Niagara Falls Canada on May 18 to receive representatives of the contending parties. The mediators held daylong sessions and indicated the whole Mexican affair is within their scope. Carranza is excluded for now but could join later.
El Paso dispatch reports General Manuel Chao removed as governor after involvement in Carranza administration. Detailing fallout, the move reshapes regional leadership and authority alignment in wartime Mexico.
Washington reports more than 7 000 refugees evacuated from Mexico over the last two weeks with about 3 000 Americans remaining en route to Vera Cruz and other ports. Senate Democratic leader Senator Kern predicted an adjournment date of July 10 after a White House conference with the president Hoke Smith and O Gorman. He said the Panama tolls repeal bill could be disposed of in two weeks and the antitrust program could be completed before adjournment. He added the rural credits bill should be reached. O Gorman said there would be every effort for an early July adjournment.
A large crowd of armed men surrounded Bridgewater's Scenic Theatre after a performer, who claimed to be Mexican, insulted the American flag. Chief Ryan and Mayor Guenthner intervened, escorting the actor outside where he saluted the flag and pledged allegiance.
Thirteen survivors of the British steamer Columbian from Antwerp to New York were picked up by the Cunard liner Franconia after a fire at sea 300 miles south of Cape Race. Chief Steward Matthews died, and 17 men in another boat remain adrift as Franconia continues search efforts.
City election tallies show Winn Powers leading mayoral race with 18 262 votes and Nash trailing with 15 961 votes in St. Paul Minnesota.
