In Minnehaha County South Dakota Peter M Sorkilo formerly of Dell Rapids faced arrest after marrying without consent and then facing seduction charges from his former betrothed Miss Josephine Anderson. Anderson later swore out a second warrant accusing a more serious crime. Sorkilo was arrested in Tabor and is jailed in Sioux Falls awaiting circuit court.
Yinron S J reports a fair week with seasonable temperatures aiding field work. Wheat oats spelt spring rye and barley sowing are well advanced or finished across regions with some reseeding needed due to poor seed and damp cold weather. Grass is improving and potato planting gardening progress well while plowing and ground prep for corn advances.
Trev Charles A Lyons, a former preacher, was arrested in St Paul and brought back to Sioux Falls to face trial for deceiving Miss Emma Pervis. He waived preliminary hearing, was held for circuit court, and was identified by Lyons's wife at the depot. Lyons had previously married in October and disappeared in December. The case follows a pattern of prior marriages and deceit uncovered by Miss Pervis and related investigations. Rejoice Over Return Passes Granted. Belle Fourche, S. D., May 6.-There is general rejoicing among the cattle men of this district over the granting of the return pass over the railroads from the receiving stations in the east. The shipping of cattle from this part of the Hills means the traveling of a great many men back and forth, and to pay the transportation charge would have meant several thousand dollars a year extra to the cattlemen.
J B Bertrand of Alexandria owns what is described as the oldest clock in the northwest. The 60 foot high hall clock, made in 1785 in Acadia by Andres for General Antoine Poland, stood in Champlain New York before being moved to Alexandria by the clock’s present owner, a great great grandson of General Poland. The wooden works and brass dial retain good condition after more than a century.
Judge Garland of the U S district court in Sioux Falls May 4 denied Standard Oil’s bid for a temporary injunction to halt South Dakota oil inspection laws. He vacated the prior restraining order, noting the vast public kerosene use and small damages to Standard Oil compared with state citizens.
Yankton South Dakota May 4 delegates elected at the Republican county convention to attend the state gathering in Sioux Falls. The uninstructed slate opposes the Crawford campaign with names including P. M. The Elk Creek two year old daughter of James Harrington remains unfound as of May 4. A mudhole death report is denied by local search parties. Volunteers persist with a wide search, with some locals suggesting wolves may have taken the child, though no evidence supports that theory.
A blaze at a farm four miles southwest of Salem destroyed three horses and a bard and sheds belonging to Tony Wahle. One more horse was severely burned and may die. Total loss estimated at 1200 dollars, with 550 dollars insured through Farmers Mutual Fire and Lightning Insurance of Mc Cook county.
Senator Mc Cumber presented the resignation of Melvin Grigsby as United States attorney for the Nome district in Alaska. The resignation was accepted after Attorney General Knox urged the president to dismiss him for disobedience of orders in leaving his post without permission.
Lyman County republican convention names delegates to the state convention led by J. G. Bartine Rh. S. Mackay and Chas. Gaddis with others. Resolutions back J. Q. Anderson for Chicago convention and commend national committeeman J. M. Green. Alternate delegation is Crawford aligned.
At the Hanson republican county convention Alexandria May 3 the delegates chosen to the Sioux Falls state convention include B. J. Wagner W. L. Ryburn I. B. Yule J. H. Dobson W. H. Stark A. A. Kudt G. G. Guinter W. J. Murray W. H. Woods C. C. Kamback A. B. Brown and William Hildebrand The convention endorsed senators representatives in Congress and state administration and supported Dick Haney for supreme court judge and Frank T. B. Smith for circuit judge The delegates were uninstructed.
Raymond F. Waller, in charge of national irrigation work in western South Dakota, visits Deadwood and will move to Belle Fourche to set up summer headquarters. He is joined by H. Pitch, chief of his division. A. P. Davis and J. H. Quinton of the U S Geological Survey accompanied them as they surveyed the proposed Belle Fourche river ditch. Fitch notes further surveys and water measurements are needed before a final decision. Walters will lead a field party of forty surveyors to complete the preliminary work.
Clear Lake May 8 Deuel county instructed its delegates for Elrod and adopted the unit rule. Elrod attended the convention and delivered a rousing speech. The gathering adopted resolutions endorsing the national and state administrations and urging the re election of the supreme judges.
The Lake county Republican convention met in Madison South Carolina on May 8 and went anti Crawford with 22 of 75 votes. Resolutions backed the state administration and congressional delegation and called for a primary election law. Twenty-two delegates to the state convention were selected led by State Senator J. H. Williams who controlled the meeting. Delegates remain uninstructed.
Pukwana South Dakota May 2 heavy immigration to Lyman county with ten outfits daily moving westward. Locals note cowmen opposed settlement over water and soil concerns. Russians near Chamberlain prosper with good crops. Milwaukee road officials inspect Missouri River, weighing a bridge at Chamberlain or Brule City for line extension to the Hills.
Traveling salesmen from Ponca Neb. were arrested in Centerville S D on peddler charges. Judge Dwyer discharged them ruling the act applied to interstate commerce and the Chicago firm plans damages suit. In Huron Albert Scheef had his wife Anna arrested for leaving with another man. she bonded to answer in September.
Exam for candidates seeking the rural delivery route south and east of Ethan, S D, is scheduled for tomorrow. The route is to start Monday, May 2. The Co operative creamery board, after a closed meeting, leased the plant for one year with a three year option to H. H. Gary of Mt. Vernon, S D, who runs a large centralized operation there. The lease aims to grow local business and expand the creamery’s territory.
Sioux Falls hosts the South Dakota State League of Republican clubs convention next Wednesday with expectations of a large turnout. National leader J Hampton Moore will address the gathering along with O L Branson and Judge G G Bennett of Deadwood. Delegates from many clubs across the state will attend.
H E Dimick, a South Dakota pioneer, was found dead at his East Vermillion home on April 29 from an apoplexy stroke. He had lived alone since his wife’s death and planned a visit to his daughter in Muscatine, Iowa, next week.
Large herd of stray white horses roams the Cheyenne river reservation as Indians prepare a general roundup. Horses found on the reserve without tags will be advertised for sale and the proceeds directed to the reservation school fund for maintenance of schools.
South Dakota fights Standard Oil over a 46 Baume and 4 degree gravity test for kerosene. Judge Carland in Sioux Falls dissolves a restraining order, allowing state enforcement to proceed while the case moves toward merits. The dispute centers on oil graded to pass the test and alleged price hikes linked to the test, with the state claiming consumer protection and the company arguing higher costs.
Huron D, April 28. The season is very backward due to cool weather and late rains. Seeding delays hit eastern counties with wet soil and rot risk for early wheat and oats. western counties see little moisture but need rain. Wheat seeding nearly finished in the south, oats ahead. mids: wheat half finished, germination slowed. Barley sown in the south. rye and winter wheat look well but need warmth. Grass and pasture poor. stock thin. feed scarce. Gardening and potato planting slow. spring plowing fair on well drained land, but much to do.
A large pressed brick manufacturing plant in Deadwood South Dakota owned by local parties and Sioux Walls capitalists, valued at $15,000, was destroyed by fire. It was partially insured and will be rebuilt.
Sturgis South Dakota April 28 The two year old daughter of James Harrington, who vanished from home while the mother was away, was found dead in a mud hole near the roadside where she had fallen. The tragedy ends a brief search and confirms a fatal accident rather than kidnapping.
McCook county Republicans in convention endorsed the entire congressional delegation and the national and state administrations. The Crawfordites captured the organization but failed to secure instructions. Fourteen of the twenty delegates are Crawford’s friends, signaling a split plan within the party.
Kingsbury county Republican convention in DeSmet South Dakota on April 28 elected to instruct their delegation for Crawford for governor and Halladay for state auditor. Resolution backed the Roosevelts administration and the national delegation. Abel named to state central committee as Halladay faced critique over the action.
Jerome Miles, early settler and original owner of Ethan, died at his Mitchell home after a long illness. He had lived in Ethan since its founding until moving three years ago. The notice also reports the death of Jenny Meyers, another longtime area resident, on his farm east of town.
State Odd Fellows and Rebekah convention set for Yankton South Dakota May 17 to 20. Grand lodge sessions at Turner hall and Rebekah assembly at Odd Fellows hall, with Sioux Falls ladies performing Tuesday night at Turner hall. I O O F encampment to meet at Red Men hall.
Two Indian boys who fled the government school at Plandreau were captured by Bon Homme county authorities while attempting a long foot journey toward Santee agency in Nebraska and Pine Ridge agency in South Dakota. They were returned to the school.
Sanborn county caucuses in Woonsocket South Carolina expressed strong support for Crawford for governor, securing a fifteen vote delegation for the Huron man. The county count convention is scheduled to meet in Woonsocket on April 30.
