Senator Millard pushes for $250000 to improve the Missouri River from Sioux City to Stubbs Ferry with further requests for $150000 to reach Stubbs Ferry. Senators Gamble and Kittredge back more funds for upper Missouri while House action remains uncertain. The river’s condition cited as hindering navigation and requiring arable flooding control.
News from Papillion to Omaha reports ice jams and Platte river breaks inundating lowlands. Bridges damaged or washed out near Schuyler and Ashland while rail lines face closures, isolating communities like Bellevue and Louisville as floodwaters force boat access.
Flood conditions in the Burlington territory show improvement on the Platte river but the Blue and Nemaha rivers remain dangerous. An ice gorge several feet high on the Blue at Crete threatens the railroad bridge downstream. The Nemaha is out of its banks at Auburn. Trains ran over the Burlington bridge at Columbus last evening for the first time since Saturday. St. Petersburg reports the Lena cruiser officers who violated parole must return to San Francisco. They are reduced one grade as punishment after yielding to U S demands.
In San Francisco on March 2 Battling Nelson of Chicago outboxed and outlasted Denver’s Young Corbett in the ninth round. Seconds stopped the fight to save Corbett after a brutal sequence as Nelson controlled the pace with precise punches and ring pressure. Corbett admitted no excuses while Nelson teased a bout with Britt next.
New York March 2 The alleged failure of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company to honor a prior agreement with its workers has raised a new crisis. A strike threatens the subways and elevated lines in Manhattan as talks stall and tensions mount.
In eMars Iowa on March 1 Judge Gaynor sentenced James McArell alias Casey to eighteen months in Anamosa penitentiary for robbing farmer Irwin Kissling at the farmers hotel last December. McArell took $150 and a watch then moved to Remsen where he spent his loot and was found with no money and Kissling’s watch.
Citizens of Larchwood IA have held meetings to start a movement toward building a town hall. They believe at least 2000 or 3000 dollars can be secured for the project. The town sits in a progressing region and has long needed the building.
Sioux City stock yards report mixed hogs at 4.70 to 4.80 and cattle to 5.25. Chicago and South Omaha quotes show hogs strong around 4.80 to 4.97, cattle varied with steers 3.30 to 5.40 at South Omaha, sheep steady with lambs 6.50 to 7.60.

Geo. S. Boutwell former governor and longtime public figure dies at Groton Mass aged 77 after pneumonia last Friday. He helped shape republican party early in life and served as governor congressman senator and treasury secretary and led the anti imperialist movement. He authored political and finance books.
Miss Mary Catherine Mulveil an heiress was shot by Daniel Herman a Chicago police officer who had pursued her after she refused his advances. He fled then killed himself in a lodging house on Archer Avenue after firing three times as she walked home from St James parochial school where she helped as sub teacher. Police searched but found no trace of him.
Denton Maryland March 1 Sam Johnson a negro ventriloquist from Queenstown angered funeral mourners with a hoax voice from a coffin prompting delay of the interment. The joke ended with Sam jailed after laughter and sheriff’s involvement.

The candidate must be under 35, married, an evangelist, a lodge member, a sociable mixer, a crank, and ready to bear the burdens of his flock.
