Delegations from Sioux Falls Aberdeen Yankton and many Dakota towns arrive by train with bands and uniforms. Fire departments from Sioux Falls Aberdeen Huron and other cities parade, slim to the big tournament, with chiefs and foremen listed and crowds cheering.
The 1887 high school class celebrated its class day with a detailed program at the school. Eva Keith led the class history, Emily Rogers sang, Beulah Windle recited the class poem, Estella Adams spoke on Our Statesmen, and Jessie Grant delivered the class prophecy. The event featured remarks by Supt. Kratz and Principal Pryne, with Dr. Dundas and M. Keith representing the board as friends praised the exercises.
Our children day observance was a grand success with singing and speaking by the pupils. The school house was tastefully decorated with prairie flowers grasses houseplants bouquets and mottoes. Mrs Ira Fraser lost a fine young cow struck by lightning on Tuesday June 7. Mrs L N Nabinger attended the U S convention June 7 as a delegate the sole representative from our school.
Castalia’s J Mitchell and Chamberlain’s B C Stevens are among visitors, with local figures Geo C Kober, Geo A Johnston, J R Gamble and others from Sioux Falls, Milton and White Lake attending the city tournament. Names include Clark Elliott, Franz Kandt, Lillie Molie, and Ed B Brown as local participants and observers.
Con Muntley, a top sprinter for the fluron hook and ladder team, was badly injured dusk yesterday near the fair grounds. He struck an invisible plain wire fence while sprinting on level prairie, suffering deep cuts and bruises and doubt arises about his ability to race. His absence would cripple the Huron team and is a personal setback.
The ladies who are interested in the two city bose companies are to don their respective colors during the week.
Those favoring the Charlie Shaw company to prepare badges of red and blue and the adherents of the Form Orswell company of blue and white hope fair partisans will wear the colors of their favorites to cheer and spur them on to their best efforts.
A list of homestead entries with dates from 1887 requires claimants to prove why residence was not established within the statutory period. Several names are ordered to show cause why their entries should not be cancelled for lack of good faith or to furnish second proof of citizenship, with specific parcel numbers and dates cited.
Fred J Perry and J R Rockwell attended the grand encampment as city delegates from this area. The event began Wednesday and concluded today with a banquet on the eighth followed by private business and officer elections. Rockwell elected colonel, McKinzie lieutenant colonel, Bras major, and Cole men members of the council. The colonel’s staff included Clark adjutant Perry quartermaster Warden Eden mounting officer. National encampment delegates named Cook Perry alternates Wells Webb. The closing grand ball and Arlington supper capped a good time for attendees.

A sleazy conman visited several stores, making small purchases and handing back altered change. He would exchange a gold piece for silver, then request paper money instead of the silver after counting to ten. If paper money was unavailable, he would produce correct change and keep the ten-dollar bill hidden, slipping away in the rush.
J Mordoff's horse bolted from near the warehouse around 2 a.m. Saturday causing a lively run along Main Street. The horse struck a lamp post at the First National corner, leaving the buggy and broken harness as onlookers restrained the animal.
John Abraham of Mt. Vernon has recovered enough from a months long illness under Mrs. Orswell’s faith cure to walk the farm. Ayer’s Sarsaparilla is advertised as a cure for chronic catarrh, claiming thorough eradication from the blood. Incorporation filings list Western Partner Publishing Co. with W. S. Preston and S. D. Cook and $20,000 capital. Also promotes hair vigor by J. C. Ay er & Co. as a universal beautifier for the hair.
