Drowning reported near Maloneyville on Pickerel lake twenty miles northeast of Webster S D. Oscar Smedstad aged 23 and Annie Hustad aged 18, both residents north of town, died when their boat overturned during a trip with Oscar Loen and Miss Nordnesson. One swimmer survived and helped others until aid arrived. The other two occupants could not swim and drowned.
Pierre South Dakota June 15. The department of agriculture may think they are close to finding the Spineless cactus a sought after arid southwest plant. Professor Kerr and Janitor Sanders collected a native cactus, removed spines, and placed it in the state house floral collection prompting visitors to report the find to agricultural officials. Kerr was asked to explain the source and reasons for the anomaly in the cactus world.
Pierre June 15. South Dakota towns report lower census figures amid new enforcement. Attorney General Hall says law requires registration of all children aged 6 to 21 regardless of marriage. Officials note prior padding yielded more state funds. new duties and penalties may trigger a re census at local cost.
Langford researcher S. S. Greengross tests wheat from rusted seed inside a bay window. Plants grew but died after six inches, showing black rust on taller stalks. Agricultural expert M. F. Greeley says warmth indoors caused the issue and that outdoors with dry cool weather wind, rust should not be a problem in South Dakota fields this season.
The Masonic grand lodge convened in Aberdeen with 175 registered at Ward hotel. Grand Master Ivan W. Goodner of Pierre presided as Dr. George E. Countryman of Aberdeen gave the welcome. The grand chapter of the Eastern Star and the Catholic Order of Foresters also held sessions with leadership addresses and a high mass at Sacred Heart church.
Rev. Frederick F. Johnson of Brookfield Massachusetts was today elected bishop coadjutor of the South Dakota missionary district. He has led Christchurch in North Brookfield for several months and proceeds to a new post.
William T. Morstell of St. Paul Minnesota and Royal B. Stearns of Pierre South Dakota were arraigned in federal court charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States by making land entries to sell relinquishments. Both pleaded not guilty. Indictments returned by a federal grand jury yesterday.
Vermillion South Dakota June 12 Oliver Johnson a local born singer now touring big opera stages visits his parents for a few weeks before heading to New York for study until August He rose as a basso with Castle Square Opera company and later with the Beauty Doctor Imperial Four quartet and the Bostonians repeatedly winning praise in major cities for his strong bass voice.
Miss Rosa Agnes Couglin wed Ira Fugene Frasier in the first ceremony on the Rosebud reservation opened last August. The bride is daughter of Mrs. Hugh Couglin, a leading property holder in Charles Mix and Gregory counties, South Dakota. The groom, from Oklahoma, runs A Zorba's general store in Herrick, the reservation's largest merchant.
State Superintendent Nash asks county superintendents to delay county library board meetings until early August. The pause aligns with the release of a new book catalogue to provide better selection lists.
Articles of incorporation filed for the Pierre Cement Brick and Oil Company in Pierre South Dakota with capital of 500000. Incorporators include J L Lockhart H D Jennings S G Trine Ellen Jennings and John B Lockhart all local. They own riverfront with cement shale deposits to develop quickly.

Sioux Falls is told Hon. G B Ravndahl leaves Beirut after seven years of efficient administration to take the Dawson City, British Alaska consul post with a $6,000 salary. He aided in 1903 during Syrian unrest and was praised by Admiral Cotton. Ravndahl will move with his family, wintering in Sioux Falls.]]
Mrs William Rhinelander Stewart, New York society leader, joins Sioux Falls divorce colony seeking relief from matrimony. She travels with two companions, registers privately at a leading hotel, and plans to obtain residency for six months to qualify under South Dakota law with attorney Senator Kitredze.
Sam Carr and Granville Thornton, both of Yankton South Carolina, quarreled at a negro resort yesterday. A revolver shot killed Granville Thornton. Sam Carr is held for murder.
Sioux Falls reports the NW United Commercial Travelers grand council meeting adopted resolutions opposing a general rate standard and urging Congress to empower the Interstate Commerce Commission to set both maximum and minimum rail rates and enforce those decisions in discrimination cases.
Huron June 10 to 16 the State Federation of Women's Clubs devoted the morning session to a paper by Mrs Julia Connor on London libraries. Cities like Deadwood Sioux Falls Milbank Aberd Maldey? Yankton and Vermilion are erecting buildings while others plan soon. Distinguished visitors included Governor Elrod and Professor Kerr. Miss Price and Miss Miner attended and joined deliberations. A musicale at J W Campbell home honored members and visitors and was a highlight of the season.
Several hundred delegates attended the two day Grand Lodge session in Sioux Falls with a harmonious adjournment. Officers for the coming year were elected including Grand Chancellor John M. Wade Aberdeen and many other state leaders. U S G Cherry was chosen as supreme lodge representative for four years, Aberdeen to host next year’s meeting. The event closed with light humor as Grand Inside Guard Walker quipped about czar of Russia.
The Northwest states branch of the United Commercial Travelers of America opened its twelfth annual convention in Sioux Falls South Dakota on June 10 with an informal reception at the Dacotah club. Knights of the grip register at a central headquarters as locals prepare for a successful gathering through Saturday night.
Beginning Wednesday evening last the state convention of the Christian churches Disciples met in Highmore for its annual session. About seventy five delegates from across the state attended with guests including Rev. C W Muckley of Kansas City secretary of the national church extension board, Rev Glemmens of Decatur and Miss Mattie W Burgess of Indianapolis who has served in missionary work in India since 1892. The sessions were well attended and much interest shown.
Roy W. Abel an 18-year-old son of Senator E. L. Abel of Bridgewater South Dakota has developed a wireless telegraphy device enabling communication from his home to his father's bank four blocks away. He has been testing the system for a year with remarkable success. Census enumerator James Bard reports Bridgewater’s population at 820, up from 691 in 1900, a five year gain of 124.
President Roosevelt assigns T. D. Edwards editor and publisher of the Lead Daily Tribune as consul to Ciudad Juarez across the border from El Paso. Edwards has led the paper since 1899 and is a noted South Dakota Republican electoral figure. The post offers a $3000 yearly salary.

The closing session in Huron South Dakota saw the election of officers for the State Federation of Women's Clubs for the upcoming year. Appointments include Mrs. Annie A. Lumley Pierre as president and Mrs. Emma H. Coquilette Miller as vice president with several secretaries and an auditor from cities such as Watertown Lead and Rapid City. Delegates to the Centennial convention in St Paul next year include Lumley Statenroth Lyon Gifford with alternates Williams Seoree Greer Moulton.
June 10 Langford South Dakota reports continued failure in drilling an artesian well after reaching 950 feet. A rock obstruction resisted blasting and progress remains slow. On July 1 the town will also lose the sole saloon, leaving residents without water and alcohol.
Beresford authorities consider a whipping post after the arrest of John Dyer on wife beating charges. Dyer was found guilty and is serving a 43 day county jail term to deter others from similar crimes.
Washington reports annual readjustment of postmasters salaries with increases at Arlington Belle Fourche Brookings Hot Springs and Hurley and small decreases at Elk Point Groton Faulkton and Huron reflecting new pay scales for each city.
In Armour South Dakota on June 9 the circuit court set a 27th convening date for a libel suit brought by K G Foster against Johnson Bros. Foster claims $25000 for alleged false statements about his business history published during a political campaign.

The city hosts fifty delegates plus many visitors with Annie A. Lumley, president, among early arrivals. Delegates are hosted by local club members with entertainment arranged in homes across the city.
