Mrs. Edward Iletse of near Sisseton South Dakota perishes when a hay wagon sinks in a slough while crossing. The husband attempts rescue but cannot save her as flood water covers the road and she drowns in the three foot depth.
The Retail Jewelers' association of South Dakota welcomed a new allied organization started in Aberdeen with about sixty members of the state's 174 jewelers. Officers include President H. G. Nichols and Secretary O. L. B. Tripp. D. G. Gallett elected delegate to the national meeting in Rochester in August.
The weekly Crops and Weather report from Huron South Dakota notes considerable cloudiness with less sunshine and rain on Tuesday and scattered showers later. Soil remains moist to waterlogged in places especially north of the Missouri River. warmer days midweek with highs 73 to 81 and cool nights. Overall growth conditions were only fairly favorable and rain slowed farming in several localities.
Funeral notices in Deadwood S D recall John A Nye late resident of Colorado who in 1860 rode from Denver on horseback to attend the Wigwam Republican convention in Chicago and nominated Abraham Lincoln for president, a feat remembered as a rare frontier journey with narrow escapes.
Miss Agnes Foolreis, 16, employed in Mose Kauffman’s home, died in Sioux Falls after a fall and illness. Officials found marks and injuries on exhumed remains but doctors attributed death to anemia progressing to diabetes with gangrene. Investigations in Sioux Falls concluded natural causes rather than foul play.

Fort Randall South Dakota report notes homesteaders and ranchers suffering losses on Scalp Creek in Gregory County from a large wildcat. Rancher Tiffany tracked the animal to its lair and killed it. The specimen measured three feet seven inches, stood twenty three inches high, and weighed twenty six pounds.
Deadwood South Dakota, June 9. Local delegates report Parker named for Congress by Republicans, W S Elder chosen by Democrats, and Freeman Knowles head Socialist ticket for governor. City expects strong Deadwood representation across state offices.
Deadwood South Dakota June 8. A special train carrying the Elkhorn Valley Editorial association of Nebraska editors has arrived for its annual trip. The group will visit Lead and Deadwood theaters and travel to Hot Springs before returning home. Notables include George A. Niles Frank Pilger A. H. Charles M. Sawtell, 71, a limping wanderer, says he lost his leg on the north Omaha tracks five years ago and now revisits the spot each summer during his 3000 mile walk from Ohio to Oregon. He arrived in Omaha after a journey from Finlay, Ohio to Marshalltown, Iowa and plans to be back next year for the trek.
The county grand jury at Waterloo Nebraska indicted H B Waldron a Waterloo banker on charges of forgery for altering a deed name in a real estate transaction. The indictment was announced from Omaha Nebraska on June 8.
The weekly weather report for Lincoln Nebraska notes a cool week with below normal rainfall and about normal sunshine. Daily mean temperatures averaged four degrees below normal. highs reached above 80 in the south while northern areas were cooler. several nights dropped below freezing with light frosts. Showers fell Tuesday and then on Wednesday and Sunday in scattered amounts. total weekly rainfall stayed below normal. From April to date the rainfall is below normal in southern and some northeastern counties while above normal in the rest of the state.
Washington reports Commissioner of Labor Charles P Neill will deliver a findings report to the president at month end concerning eight hour law violations in government contracts. The AFL request prompted Neill’s inquiry into each cited instance with possible legal questions needing action by the attorney general before Congress adjourns.
Joseph Langner of Yankton narrowly escaped lynching after a mob of about thirty tied a rope to his neck over a dead tree stump along the Bad River. Langner’s wife Langner, pregnant and beaten earlier, collapsed. he offered to continue to his claim but pledged to seek medical aid. A Fort Pierre doctor later said Mrs. Langner would live.
Albert Korst a telephone lineman in Yankton South Dakota suffered severe burns to both hands and a facial cut when wires crossed with a live line at the Pierce hotel. He became stuck on the live wire until freed and fell eighteen feet onto a cement floor sustaining further injuries. He is recovering but left with scarred hands and questions about why he survived.
Aberdeen S D June 11 The seventeenth annual session of the grand lodge of South Dakota Knights of Pythias closed with a banquet and ball and an address by Former Governor Herreid. J H J Black of Sioux Falls was elected grand chancellor along with other officers. The grand lodge approved Aberdeen as next meeting place and created State Lodge No 1 to aid defunct lodges. The parade drew thousands and featured a huge rake on wheels labeled the D O K K muck rake.
A smooth forger victimized a Brookings bank for 450 dollars after cashing a certified check in Sioux Falls. The check appeared legitimate but was a forgery. The bank hopes to recover funds or compel settlement if the swindler is captured. Authorities pursue the suspect.
In Huron South Dakota on June 11 a reward of 130 dollars is posted for the capture of Walter Degorno who fled town a few days ago with a horse and top buggy owned by Maurice Dineen a local liveryman.
The South Dakota Democratic convention in Yankton endorsed William Jennings Bryan for president on a government ownership platform. It named a strong state ticket with W. S. Elder and S. A. Ramsey for Congress and John A. Stranskey for governor, plus officers including Latta, Mayes, Martin, Harris, Laughlin, Lion, and Lyon. The measure stressed Bryan reforms and public ownership amid debate over railroads telegraphs and telephones.
Hot Springs Arkansas reports the state convention endorses William Jennings Bryan for president with Governor Jefferson Davis proclaimed the U S senator nominee. Indiana delegates at the state gathering express strong Bryan support while Missouri's convention backs Bryan for 1908 with Rube Oglesby named railroad and warehouse commissioner and H A Gase for state schools chief.
Lucy Johnson aged 17, married five months, committed suicide at her home in Sioux Falls by chloroform. A note addressed to her husband Hubie asked what he would say at dinner and declared the love had been crushed. Coroner to inquest, parents attempted to destroy the note, and government service threats loom as motive remains unclear.
Vermillion South Dakota June 11 six East Hall coeds and escorts took a picnic launch down the Vermillion river and drifted into the Missouri river after a propeller failure. They walked ten miles home arriving at 3 a m. A search party was ready but the group returned on foot shortly afterward.
The teenth annual session of the Knights of Pythias in South Dakota began in Aberdeen with about 200 delegates from 51 lodges. John Wade of Aberdeen presided as grand chancellor while Mayor Aldrich welcomed attendees. Many delegates attended state political conventions and adjournment was taken until this morning. The program included grand officer reports and the Dramatic Order of the Knights of Khorassan parade planned for tonight.
F E Strawder, a well known attorney in Clark, South Dakota, was found dead in his office early yesterday. His wife returned home to find him missing, and a boy discovered him in his chair with no signs of violence. Suspected heart failure ends a twenty year legal career. he was law partner of Governor Elrod.
