Weather over the week was cloudy and cool with widespread moisture delaying some field work. Corn planting mostly finished except where replanting was needed. oats wheat oats and rye in good condition. alfalfa and millet thriving. fruit set evident. livestock improving overall.
Bridgewater held a special election under new laws naming W. B. Rosecrans as mayor and council members G A Guenther , G W Laing , G A Clauser , Adam Wetrick as aldermen plus Edward Riley assessor James Smith treasurer James Bard city justice and W T Smith police justice. The Bridgewater Canaries lost 4 to 2 to Alexandrian Maroons on their grounds. Madison South Dakota team arrives June 8 for a four game, three series with locals.
Several city school teachers leave for summer breaks across homes and distant cities. Principal Catherine Preneh resigns for health and returns to Ilk Point. Olive Clark resigns to teach at the institute and move to Los Angeles. Others plan to stay in St Louis, Minneapolis, Saginaw, or Montana, with September returns noted.
Sheriff Laughlin returned from Chicago with A. W. Walter who faced adultery charges here. Walter, bonded for $500 to appear for court on the 17th of last month, forfeited by non appearance and is now jailed in Pierre, South Dakota.
Chairman Martin of the democratic state committee issued a call for the state convention to be held in Aberdeen July 20 to name candidates for state offices. Also announced is the South Dakota Auctioneers Association second annual convention set for June 16 and 17 in Sioux Falls with C P Hanson and O M Merritt as president and secretary.
The Vermillion river tragedy claims 54 year old mason Joseph A Byerly who drowned while assisting his nephew after a fishing accident. His body was recovered about fifteen minutes later and resuscitation failed. Coroner released without inquest. his death deeply saddens his wife and children.
Springfield South Carolina June 16 Commencement week at the Springfield normal school closes with a record year including a recital concert and baccalaureate service The school reports its most prosperous year yet and plans for a statewide oratory and athletic meet next May Dormitory construction for sixty four dorm rooms and a dining hall is underway and expected to boost enrollment The alumni banquet honors Professor Buckle who received a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Wooster
Death is reported at Atlantic City of Colonel C W Foster U S A retired after a forty year army career. He once served as paymaster in Sioux City and was known along the river. In Yankton he left many old friends and was married to a sister of John Carrer. His only child died in the Spanish American War in the Philippines.
A cutting affray last night at Harrison south of Delmont South Dakota left A B Beeson seriously wounded after a clash with Postmaster C A Wilcox. Dr Robertson attended to the injuries at midnight.

Parker hosts a two day baseball meet from June 6 to June 14 and 15 featuring Canton Alexandria Lennox Viborg and other teams. Top players from the northwest are expected to compete as Parker aims for two days of genuine sport.
Fire today destroyed the seven story drug warehouse of McKesson & Robbins on Ann Street. Estimated loss is $100,000. The blaze caused extensive damage and investigations are underway.
Deadwood South Dakota reports three drownings and thousands of dollars in damage from a three day flood. Bridges on Whitewood creek and many railroad tracks are destroyed, water mains broken, and telegraph service cut. Mines and cyanide plants shut, about two thousand five hundred workers laid off, city awaiting repairs and resumed service.
Judge J W McCoy orders verdict for C J McLeod editor Aberdeen Daily News against H D Shepard. Jury awards $500 damages after brief deliberation. Trial arose from Shepard’s claim that a 10 percent takeoff from a bowling alley slot machine went to McLeod. if unpaid, McLeod may imprison Shepard in the county jail.
Aberdeen South Dakota June 8 The Aberdeen board of education adopts a seven year system replacing eight grades in public schools. The change is expected to save one year for 95 percent of pupils allowing entrance to high school earlier and earlier graduation. A commercial and business course is added to the high school. The Western Warm Mortgage Company winds up with stockholders forming the Dakota Land Company to liquidate assets including buildings and farm lands. Dr J C Willson of Flint Michigan serves as president with M H Kelly and J L Browne in other posts. The Dakota Land Company capitalization is 66000 dollars.
Great rain drenches the Black Hills with forty eight hours of downpour. Bridges wash out on Burlington and Northwestern lines halting railway traffic between Deadwood and Lead. No sign of main stopping as flood conditions persist.
Aberdeen South Dakota assessor I D Campbell and assistants complete city census showing 7429 residents across four wards. Including nearby nonresidents could raise tally to about 7729. school enrollment listed at 1727. A coal syndicate near town reports a 22 foot vein at 90 feet depth on leased land.
Clarence Rupp vs J H Shaw and Armour token settled after a three day hearing. Jury out six hours, verdict against the town for sums at issue and payment of all bills within fifteen days after artesian well dispute. Next case: Mary Gaylord vs Armour for injuries from a defective sidewalk.
Edgemont S D June 7 An engineer on the Burlington train between Newcastle and Edgemont D B Aultz was scalded to death and Engineer Robert Freeman badly burned by a boiler tube break. Both men are well known along the Burlington line especially at Alliance and this area.
Nearly 100 physicians attend the South Dakota State Medical association meeting in Redfield. Dr. C R Maltbery of Aberdeen is elected president with Dr Adelbert H Bower and Dr J Coulter as first and second vice presidents, Dr Edwards of Bowdle continues as secretary treasurer. The next gathering will be in Deadwood. In Aberdeen an injury damages suit against the city ends in a directed verdict for the city and another case against the city is dismissed.
Hudson South Dakota June 7 The third annual commencement of Hudson high school was held at the Iverson opera house. An entertainment followed with all school departments taking part including the fourth act of Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice. Auno Larson as Shylock and Fayola Coutts as Portia impressed in their roles.
W T Hutchison, a poultry, butter and eggs dealer, has occupied a new two story 28 by 96 foot building in Salem. The poultryman plans a second structure of similar size later in the season and has been buying and shipping at the location for several years.
In Montrose McCook county, Sam Jorgenson and Sophia Holstrom wed after a postponed ceremony. Jorgenson had licenseed to wed February 10 but delayed following a night out, the couple marrying despite neighborhood rumors. A separate note from Canton, South Dakota reports Wendt withdrew as a Republican state senate candidate, citing lack of liquor support and unwillingness to compromise.
Delegates from northern South Dakota boost turnout at the state Sunday school convention in Huron. Speakers include Mrs Leach Miss Hughes and Dr James Chalmers. The final session praised Bible study in schools. next convention set for Mitchell.
In Pierre South Dakota firms led by the Phoenix of Brooklyn attack the valued policy law arguing it gives the insurance commissioner power to set policy forms. The case will be heard at Mitchell on July 4 with Preston Hannett of Mitchell leading the defense.
The Third district republican judicial convention opened in the morning with three candidates for circuit judge J P Cheever of Brookings Gores W Case of Watertown and George Marquis of Clear Lake Marquis was not nominated on the sixtieth ballot Coddington and Clark shifted votes to him final tally 59 for Marquis 48 for Cheever Other ballots showed Marquis leading Case and Cheever while county delegations debated leadership roles at the Garden City convention.
Mohonk Lake N Y June 6 Today's conference session adopted a platform urging all peoples to unite in supporting international arbitration as the best recourse for securing justice when diplomacy fails. Leading speakers included Justice Brewer of the U S Supreme Court Congressman Bartholdt of Missouri and Dr Edward Everett Hale.
At the state convention in Cheyenne Wyoming Democrats elected delegates to the national convention and urged votes for Hearst. Resolutions adopting Hearst support condemn trusts and the current Republican leadership, calling for an anti shoddy bill and adherence to the unit rule. Delegates listed include Colon Hunter J A Rogers G T Beck D L Stickney J H Allard and Mr Cresswell.
