Milwaukee cousin among Eastland victims in Chicago disaster
Charles W. Menges of Milwaukee, a cousin of Charles H Roddy of Mitchell, died when the Eastland capsized in the Chicago River last Saturday. His funeral was held amid reports of the shipwreck and inquiries into the incident. Mrs. Sophia Menges, his mother, traveled to Chicago to recover his body, No. 260, and awaited services in Milwaukee. A Milwaukee crowd reflects on the tragedy and its lingering questions about the Western Electric picnic.
