Saloon keepers who bought buildings in new western Dakota towns wonder where licenses will come from. Under state law no license can be granted without a favorable vote at a regular election, which did not occur in these towns. Next election is April, so saloons may not operate until July 1, 1908 at the earliest, leaving new towns dry until next summer.
W A White recounts a passenger train on the Omaha line chased for miles by four tornadoes near Mitchell and Mt Vernon. He describes seeing one funnel upright and another lifting from the ground, with wreckage and a large barn left in its path as the storm moved away toward Mitchell.
Christ Nelson dies at St Luke's hospital after Theodore Taylor's shooting at Glenhar. Taylor, initially charged with assault with intent to kill, now faces first degree murder charges. The dispute began during an earlier assault case where both men were witnesses on opposing sides.
Bancroft South Dakota July 17 The Bancroft Register makes its debut as the town’s first newspaper. George W Brown of Huron serves as editor.
Pukwana July 17 The finishing touches are being put on the two and one half story residence of J A Stransky the largest dwelling in Brule county and thoroughly modern in all its appointments It will cost eight thousand six hundred to ten thousand dollars

The Polk city directory for Huron shows the city as a lodge rich community with more secret societies than any other South Dakota city. Masons Odd Fellows and Elks are strongest among groups. Population around 4,200 with 2,480 names listed, estimated by a factor of two and a half.
Bridgewater South Dakota July 17 James Peltjes a single man employed in the Vollmer Brewery at I2mery South Dakota was killed when he tried to stop a runaway team He was struck about the head and chest and died a few hours later in the local hospital
The secretary of the interior awarded a $46,000 contract to J E Hilton of Belle Fourche for excavating 229,500 cubic yards of material on the Belle Fourche Irri gation project. An extension of 60 days was granted to S R H Robinson of St Louis to finish the diverting dam and main canal structures after May floods damaged the works. John A Nelson of Sidney Montana was hired to construct eleven culvert drains on divisions 5 and 6 of the main canal for the lower Yellowstone project at a cost of $5,908.
In The Hague on July 17 members of the Korean delegation to the peace conference report indirect news from Seoul that Japan is tightening control over Korea. A Japanese declaration about annexation was circulated to sway public opinion but was rejected by Koreans. One member warned of a plan to dethrone the Korean emperor and make him a Japanese prince, similar to a historic case south of Japan.
Watertown S D July 15 The current South Dakota National Guard encampment at Lake Kampeska boosts the prospect of the site becoming a federal military rendezvous. Officers praise the rifle range as one of the west’s best and rail access within three miles via Northwestern, Chicago Rock Island and Pacific, Minneapolis and St Louis, and Great Northern lines. The camp is now led by the adjutant general with Major George W Carpenter Major J G Mesfarland Captain C K Snyder and Captain BE Yeamons on the board of survey. Captain C C Maxwell handles supplies and meals for 35 cents each. United States disbursing officer Captain Henry M Hanten oversees federal funds for encampment and Major J E Platt serves as state paymaster. The federal government has spent about 10000 on the rifle range and plans 15000 more. ten new national targets were added last year.
The annual convention of the Tri State Grain Dealers association is in session in Sioux Falls with delegates from Minnesota Iowa Nebraska South Dakota North Dakota Wisconsin and Illinois. F W Crandall of Mankato Minn presides. Mayor Pillsbury of Sioux Falls welcomes delegates. J J McHugh of Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce speaks.
Brookings South Dakota July 16 State's attorney Olof Eldem demands County Auditor P J Murphy repay 700 dollars to the county treasurer for extra salary claimed as unlawful. If not paid in ten days legal steps to recover will be taken. The dispute tests whether the commissioners had power to grant extra pay.
Laurie Walger, 4 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walder of Sioux Falls, fell from a smooth rock while wading near the Big Sioux River falls yesterday afternoon and drowned. No one nearby could swim, so rescuers were unable to save her.
In South Dakota the push to store Sioux River flood waters grows as Sioux Falls actors seek to use Lake Poinsett and Lake Kampeska as storage basins. Proponents aim to assure year round flow for power and protect farmland from spring overflows.
In Watertown South Dakota July 16 Miss Mae Othness died after a wagon tongue struck the auto her family rode in near their Lake Kampeska cottage. The horse team bolted wrecking the car and she was thrown beneath the animals, dying three hours later. She had just graduated from the high school and was well regarded. Her father is a merchant tailor. This marked a third family death in three years.
Centerville South Carolina July 16 The council reversed a prior ruling and granted a license to the county commissioners chosen men. No license is granted for the Hotel Crane and the landlord warns he may quit his lease.
Alec Reichmann of Bonesteel has bought the old Sun-Review printing plant from Edwan M. Starcher. He plans to start a Republican newspaper in Fairfax next week, promoting Senator Kittredge and the old state machine in the forthcoming campaign.
Tri-State Grain Dealers association elected officers in Sioux Falls with I. E. Crandall of Mankato re chosen as president and J. M. Bennett of Flandreau as vice president. Board members named were A. H. Wood L W Gifford A H Betts E P St John H H Minthorn and W A Forsythe. Conference approved extending the field to northern Minnesota and urged policy changes on unloading inspections and shipment acceptance. John J. Decker of Menno S C attended but left after learning his son drowned.
Pierre South Dakota July 16 The state historical department records an Indian divorce decree granted on the Sisseton Indian reservation by an Indian court on June 16 1885. The decree is written in Indian on a small sheet of note paper and the donor seeks to file it as evidence of early territorial court procedure.
Beresford North Dakota July 16. SoO Steensland a leading local businessman learned yesterday that his brother Oleo Steensland was killed by a lightning bolt while driving across the prairies of western North Dakota.
In Point, South Dakota on July 16 the Union county vital statistics for year ending June 30, 1907 show 224 births, down from 231 the prior year. Deaths were 81, vs 82 previously, and 85 marriage licenses were issued.
Deadwood South Dakota July 138 L fire department protests a 70 cent round trip rate for the Sturgis picnic. On July 25 Deadwood fire departments vote to refuse aid to Northwestern Railway property in case of fire unless the concession is granted. The volunteer fire company seeks a price change by the deadline.
Berkeley July 13 A complete list of American Rhodes scholarship appointees set to go to Oxford this summer was released by Farnham P Griffiths secretary to President Wheeler of the University of California Forty five Americans and eight from Canada are named among the appointees Ben Tomlinson Champaign WI is listed among them.

Rapid City reports Professor E. Or. Stevens of the state school of mines faculty will assume the presidency of the Avery Institute in Charleston. A Vermillion graduate, former Centerville resident, and Yale attendee, Stevens has guided his career from South Dakota to South Carolina.
J. Doyle of Waterloo Iowa a timekeeper on the Milwaukee extension west of the Missouri river died in St Luke's hospital Aberdeen following an appendicitis operation. He was a single man about 28 years old.
The Gas Belt exposition is formed as a corporation with $25,000 capital. Incorporators are John L. Lockhart John S. Newell and Charles H. Anderson. It aims to build and operate an exposition and convention building. The National Bank of Commerce contracts for a three story Bedford stone building at Pierre street and Dakota avenue. Citizens of Philip prepare for a harvest festival on September 1.
Yankton South Dakota July 13 John No votny a prominent rich citizen was found in the cemetery alive and said he wanted to die. He is believed temporarily insane after losing a small law suit in justice court yesterday.
Washington announces a Postmaster General order effective August 1 allowing the front of a postal card to be divided by a vertical line one third from the left. Left side may carry a message while the right side is reserved for the address. A thin attached sheet is allowed if it adheres to the card. Back may bear ads or illustrations.
Madison, Wis July 15 After an hour of humorous discussion the assembly killed the Hughes anti tights bill prohibiting any actress or woman performer from appearing in public with a skirt falling less than four inches below the knees. Simon Smith Beloit urged a law requiring ballroom gowns to come at least four inches above the waist line.
William Moser confined in Brown County jail at Aberdeen Iowa confessed to murdering E Markalsee near Columbia on July 4. He said Markalsee drew a knife and he shot in self defense. the confession previously kept secret by the county officials. J W Moser of Strawberry Point Iowa, father of the accused, is in Aberdeen.
Rock Rapids Iowa July 16 Deputy Sheriff Roy Rogers lost his left arm when his gun discharged while guarding 113 Italians accused of killing quail and song birds for food during a Great Northern rail yard operation near Lester. The Italians pleaded guilty. fines were set at four dollars each and most were paid.
Three masked highwaymen waylaid the Excelsior Terra Cotta paymaster en route from Rocky Hill station to the plant but seized no money because payday had been changed and he did not carry the usual ten thousand dollars.
A Kansas City woman rushed to Walnut Street police station asking for help finding her son. She described a 26 year old salesman in a depcuaeny store who left three days ago to work. Police, told to look for the boy and send him home, recorded no name.
Ned Waterbury of ey, Kansas, arrived in Wichita two weeks ago to open a grocery, and wed Marie Hurley in a launch on the Arkansas River. The bridal boat rocked and the bride’s gown soaked while the ceremony went on.
