A coroner's jury in Roberts County South Dakota found Charles Horn a full blood Sisseton Sioux died from death by own action by drinking water while intoxicated. The unusual autopsy showed the stomach filled with water leading to the verdict.
A house cat at Denhart ranch in Lake county caused a blaze after tipping a lamp and catching its fur on fire. The oil spread, sparking a frantic chase as the cat dashed through rooms setting small fires along its route. Neighbors aided, saving the house and goods from greater damage.
Sioux Falls reports that James Fulton known as Port Dodge Bob and Robert Allen called Red Tobin, brought from Howard by Deputy U S Marshal Carleton, are not the men sought for the December 1894 Dalesburg post office robbery and have been released from custody.
Sioux Falls January 29 Henry Charles Warner an Indian from Santee agency Nebraska completed a three month term in Minnehaha county jail for selling liquor to Indians and escaped paying the fine by taking the poor debtor’s oath. Stephen Jones a Sioux from Yankton agency paid his $100 fine after a three month jail term for violating federal statutes and was released. Jones is wealthy owning two sections of land in the Yankton ceded portion and other property, thought to be the only Sioux Indian convicted in a U S court in South Dakota to pay a fine.
Hot Springs South Dakota January 29 Israel Calkins wins a verdict of 2160 against the First National Bank of Custer after five trials. Earlier trials yielded smaller sums or hung juries. The case from Custer involves disputes over a loan or settlement. In a separate matter, Earl L Chambers sues Modern Woodmen over Orrie L Chambers life policy, with a $2000 verdict awarded, claimed as full policy payout. defense argued death by own hand. The jury reached a quick, unanimous decision after fifteen minutes. The article also notes a Canadian trade increase with Britain totaling over 6 million dollars for the prior year.
Fire at Sheffield eight miles north of Huron on the Great Northern line destroyed John Blair's grain elevator. It held 11000 bushels of wheat and other grain. Insured value was 800 dollars for the building. the grain was not insured. Total loss estimated at 312000 dollars.
