Railways remained blocked for several days with disruption to traffic. The Methodists held a quarterly conference and announced the purchase of a new parsonage. General condition in the community shows improvement.

Missing Man Found Safe After Coastside Trip

The missing Duclos was located safe along the coast, while rail service remained disrupted by a severe weekend storm. Milwaukee Road trackage was blocked from Mile north to Chamberlain, with trains delayed as snow and winds hampered plows and crews.

Quarterly Conference Report Shows Modest Growth

Presiding Elder Boggs presided over the Methodists quarterly meeting noting an encouraging report despite hard times. The city church lists 260 members with fifteen new members added recently.

Mount Mitchell Church Reports Quarter Reports and Marriage

The Mitchell church reports 14 received by certificate or probation during the first quarter of Rev A C Stevens pastorage and ten dismissed by certificate. The pastor’s salary rose from 800 to 1000 annually. The parsonage was bought. Ladies Aid has paid 300 toward it, showing faithful support. The church ranks third largest in the state with the Sunday School the largest in the state at 350 enrolled and 18 average weekly attendance. J J McDougall’s superintendency continues promising progress. A marriage in Adrian Minnesota on January 11 1897 joined Miss Selma Carlson and Mr O M Haislet.

Northeast businessman sees Dakota future draw Eastern residents

Aberdeen News reports S W Narre gang returning from a four week visit to St. Paul Chicago and other cities. He notes Eastern belief in South Dakota's bright future and mentions several real estate deals, with many Easterners deciding to move to lands tributary to Aberdeen for dairy and stock development.

Frisky Thermometer Records Bitter Weekend Cold

The weather page notes two extremely cold days with readings from Saturday and Sunday. Government thermometer figures show Saturday 4 pm minus 10, 6 pm minus 15, and Sunday dipping to minus 21 at 8 am with a low around minus 24 before warming slightly.

Missing teacher August Duclos Located in San Francisco

About three weeks earlier August Duclos a government school teacher at Lower Brule Indian agency left for Mitchell with about 700 dollars to pay a mortgage held by Bowdle and Newcomer. He was last seen at the Milwaukee depot platform and later traces were lost. A correspondent suggested enticement and robbery but this was denied. The Masonic lodge in Kimball helped search and a telegram reported Duclos found in San Francisco California.

A college on the hill experiences a bumpy period as the Trioscope entertainment venture yields gains in some areas but overall shows limited success amid sustained improvements.

Trioscope exhibit thrills audience at Grand Opera House

Edison’s Trioscope wowed a good crowd Friday night with moving pictures of a fire department, burning barn, surf at Long Branch and more. Technical glitches and stage instability marred the show but music by Mr. and Mrs. Nichols entertained between scenes. A small fire in Allan Ladd’s apartment caused about $40 in damage, insured, with no major alarm. The Ladies' Home Journal will publish interior views of 100 homes to inspire housekeepers with affordable designs.

Mitchell University Sees Record Attendance Growth

Times Mitchell University reports rising student enrollment with 195 pursuing the regular course, a figure not seen in years. The college plans to form a band led by Prof Collette with three skilled female players from the university contributing as members.
