Senate Debates Direct Election of United States Senators
In Washington, the senate opened a general debate on direct elections for U.S. senators. Rayner led the discussion with Bacon Borah and Sutherland among others faulting the Sutherland amendment granting Congress power to regulate senatorial elections. Critics warn federal oversight could lead to federal agents at polls even as proponents push for voter control. Rayner says he would vote to meet the people's demand regardless of personal stance.
