The exodus of colored laborers from North Carolina is under way with rail emigration parties forming in Charlotte. At least 3,000 have left, mainly to Arkansas and Kansas, now shifting toward California. Seventy were handed to Santa Fe and Missouri Pacific for Los Angeles transport to work on Edward A. Baldwin’s vast lands with a $12 monthly wage and free board for the first year, Baldwin covering the $59.70 ticket.
The Dawes bill reopening the Sioux reservation, with boundary changes mostly minor, is reported to the senate from the Indian committee. It opens Crow Creek land to railroad access toward the Missouri and is expected to pass the house with Dakota's support.
Joe Howard describes a shift in New York city life as prosperity returns. Brokers and Wall Street figures reappear in luxury settings, hotels, theaters, and jewelers, with lavish meals, fashionable dress, and crowds filling up uptown venues as confidence returns.
A run on the First National bank followed a lawsuit by the Sioux Falls National against its rival to recover 16000 dollars after a cashier’s check to county treasurer C K Howard was dishonored. Howard had claimed a $27000 cash balance but the funds were questioned, raising suspicion of defalcation.
Wm. McNeil, a local hardware merchant, fell from a buggy seat collapse in Marion Junction last night. He struck his head and shoulders, fracturing his skull and sustaining other serious injuries. He is conscious briefly but largely in a stupor, with recovery in doubt. Dr. Andros of Mitchell was called but unable to attend due to ill health.
Within a week Rev. P Wilhelm, with Bishop Marty's approval, will travel east to raise funds for St Peter's church and school valued at $12 000. He will work in St Paul La Crosse and Milwaukee, connected with the Catholic Immigration bureau in New York. The Benedictine order convent and academy will be built early spring, one of the finest Dakota buildings. White Lake seeks the Duluth Hu Ron & Denver railroad and liquor license issues were resolved.
John Rowley, an elderly Crow Creek settler near Fort Thompson, defies eviction orders on his 40 acre claim after the Crow Creek Reservation opening. He refuses to move despite agent threats and local Indian hostility, asserting he knows they cannot molest him and staying put a few miles above Fort Thompson.
Anderson and Dougan along with R F Brown and Chas Smith recover money paid on forged grain checks. An attachment was served on Rowe’s personal property in Douglass county by the sheriff. A neighbor saw the $85 in Rowe’s pocket-book at the arrest by Marshal Tillman. The crime is expected to send Rowe to prison for years unless bail is posted and he flees the country.
Rapid City Journal notes a Nebraska man claims he can please everybody by creating a vacancy in the general land commissioner post. The piece humorously questions whether anyone can truly satisfy all voters.
