In Darby Pennsylvania a gander named Teddy defends Crumbeck’s barnyard from a hawk. The battle spreads across the yard with feathers torn and wings broken before Teddy drives off the hawk carrying a pullet. Teddy’s feat is described by Dr. Lee, board of health president. In Clayton Missouri 7 year old Eloise Preiss says a mockingbird guided her home after she got lost from school. Her account, shared by her mother, ties to a fairy tale lesson told by a teacher.
A Kansas pig named Jerry digs for mud when kept in a clean yard. He attempts self harm seeking water and mud, slowly weakens, and suffocates in his pen. The tale ends with a somber note and a nod to the unrelated New York Catskills project. The piece closes with verse by Kate Thomas from The Independent.
Poem praising the motherland and Westem virtues by William Cullen Bryant. It extols brave mothers, daughters, and frontier homes, promising future strength, freedom, and reverence as the nation grows. The piece frames motherhood as central to national virtue and resilience.
A reflective monologue asks for gentle passage to heaven for Pieter Marinus as he pleads to be washed clean by sea tides and Gulf Stream. He imagines being called “son of Pieter Marinus” and returning home after a life marked by piracy brawls and cheated revenue.
A collage of poetic lines and voices, including a lament on motherhood and loss by Charles Buxton, a resilient promise of persistence by Aldis Dunbar, and a rural dialect reflection on seasons. The pieces convey sorrow, struggle, faith, and lingering sentiment across periods.
