In this sweeping sale Champeny Bros announces an over $30,000 stock of Choice Goods to be closed out. The firm proclaims the greatest havoc on prices and opens its gates wider for trade as the sale proceeds.
Champeng Bros estimate their shoe stock holds 9 780 pairs with a cash value of 28 000 dollars. The note says this is too many shoes and hints at an adjustment or disposal.
Friday Saturday and Monday sale at Champeny Bros features huge discounts on shoes. Doors open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. One dollar buys three to five dollars of bankrupt stock, with goods offered at about 25 cents on the dollar.
San Francisco dispatches report from Hawni quotes the ex queen denying any plan to abandon her throne bid. Prime Minister Samuel Parker and Attorney General A Patterson, who returned on the steamer Australia, insist the queen will seek arbitration in the United States and await its verdict. They say she remains firm in maintaining the claim and did not mention seeking damages.
Monmouth Ills Jan 17 An iron rail was laid across the Iowa Central track near a bridge hindering No 5. The section foreman removed it minutes before the train passed in dense fog. City Marshal Holliday arrested R A Brooks a Monmouth College student from Delna for the deed and holds him for examination.
Milwaukee police report no progress in the Schrums murder case. Pechmann admits confession and asks relief. Investigators suspect he stole $1500 to $2000 from the victim and planted it to aid his wife and children. Chicago plans a new West Side race track near Waldheim and Hawthorne with rail links.
Des Moines January 17 The Iowa legislature formalized the U S senator race with John H Gear the Republican candidate receiving 43 to 11 in the senate and 77 to 17 in the house plus 1 for Boies. A joint session will canvass the vote in the morning. Political notices follow from St Paul where the Democratic association reports rising membership and active outreach.
Washington January 17. Hill led opposition to Hornblower for associate justice of the Supreme Court as Senator Vilas of Wisconsin, the lone Democratic judiciary committee supporter, urged confirmation. The fight in the committee marks a sharp partisan clash over the nomination.
Dairymen and breeders at Tremont House postponed meeting to evening to accommodate eastern representatives. The aim is to prevent fraudulent sale of butter substitutes and to promote higher quality, more economical production of dairy butter. A national union is likely to be formed.
A fire in Mills Kentucky destroyed Frederick A Houson s dwelling and store along with other buildings. The Houson family slept through the blaze Houson and his son escaped while Mrs Houson and her two daughters aged 17 and 19 perished trying to wake them. The Illinois supreme court blocked Wentworth Avenue sewer project scuttling a 2 million dollar plan. A midwinter excursion party of 23 from Cleveland arrived in Chicago for the fair.
Henry M Rice, longtime St Paul resident and prominent figure in Minnesota history, died suddenly in San Antonio Texas while there for health reasons. Born in Waitsfield Vermont in 1816, he moved to Michigan in 1833 and to Fort Snelling in 1839. He helped establish trading posts from Lake Superior to the Red River, settled in St Paul in 1848, served as delegate to Congress beginning in 1849 and again in 1853, and was United States senator from 1858 to 1863. His remains will be brought back to St Paul for burial.
