New York January 16 Samuel Benner repeats a grim forecast for 1895 predicting continued business depression bankrupt manufacturers unemployed labor and ruined farmers Wheat at 54 cents a bushel in Chicago cotton at 51/2 cents in Cincinnati pig iron at 10 dollars a ton in Pittsburgh Wool, cattle, and horses expected to fall. He warns grains may drop to 40 cents a bushel next harvest and corn to 25 cents a bushel hog prices around 8 dollars per 100 pounds.
Kansas City January report describes John Korum a Kansas farmer who answered a local firm advertisement. Dressed in a red braid embroidered nightgown night cap and white trousers with flounces he walked streets advertising his employers. A policeman detained him and a writ issued for the employer. Both face trial.
Robert Wilson, the first Minnesota state convict to violate parole, fled from Stillwater and is in custody in Mitchell South Dakota. Warden Wolfer sought a governor’s requisition for his return after Wilson’s parole began October 12, with 68 prisoners having parole privileges in three years.
A La Crosse area woman testified that she was drugged and married to a man named Drugan after being held for four days. Police seek Drugan as he remains at large. Also reported are Minnesota charity conference notes and a state fraud investigation report printing.
Ortwein Iowa January 16 A company is being organized to prospect for coal around Oelwein and beyond the city. Wells in town have yielded sizable specimens of coal of fine quality suggesting a mineral bed under the city limits.
Terrible destitution in Jonas N I as relief offices and soup kitchens face hundreds of people. Officials deny relief to able bodied men, though they need aid as much as others.
News from Jan 16 reports severe suffering among Sisseton and Wahpeton Indians on reservations due to a food shortage and unpaid interest on lands sold to the government. Chief Two Stars and others seek overdue payments totaling about 1.699 million dollars, while crops failed and supply lines broke, with authorities in Washington urged to act to prevent further deaths.
