Cheyenne Sioux Chief 15 Whitehorse Dies in Wyoming
Timber Jake Whitehorse, last chief of the Cheyenne River Sioux White Horse band, died December 31 at his granddaughter’s home near Cheyenne. He was about 73, left a widow and many grandchildren, but no sons or grandsons to carry the name. Whitehorse led the Sioux in their dealings with whites, located the reservation headquarters at the Knoll, and helped the 1868 treaty era. His death ends a pictorial Sioux chronicle carried by the Whitehorse family since 1790, and burial took place January 8 on the hill above the agency he located. He remained loyal to the treaty and allied with whites, even during the Sitting Bull disturbances.
