About 25 fur scarfs priced from 1.70 to 7.00 are cut to 50 cents on the dollar for a three day sale. Capes of lower value are similarly slashed. A sample line of collarettes including Stone Marten Moufton Electric Seal Beaver and imitation Grey Fox is offered at one half to two thirds off. Golf skirts also marked very low with some crepons in the lot valued at 7 marked down to 4.50.
New winter term opened with warm welcomes as the Y M C A and Y W C A hosted receptions for Dakota University’s new students. Activities included handshakes, a mock battle between English and Boers, a singing quartet, sawings by Car penter and Vandermark, a violin solo by Paul Williams, and a playful egg blowing contest ending in laughter and light refreshments.
Missen Wood Miller Fuller and Swickard presided over the cocoa. Many ladies from the city and the University attended the event and the occasion was very enjoyable.
Ralph R. Bowdle marries Sue Anne M. Mathes in Los Angeles on Saturday. The couple left for Chicago after the ceremony and plan to visit Mitchell later this week before settling back into business with the Iowa & Dakota Land Co. Bowdle, long a Mitchell resident, is lauded for his business acumen and social standing. Mathes is described as a handsome, accomplished daughter of a longtime Bowdle family friend.
Geo A Silsby left Hot Springs to join a National Grand Army committee urging Congress to locate a National Soldiers Home and sanitarium in Hot Springs Arkansas. The measure previously cleared the Senate but stalled in the House. officials and leaders back the plan as beneficial for veterans including Spanish War and Philippines veterans. The Free Methodist church in Mt Vernon opened a new, larger building aided by engines. Pastor Rev Austin, though blinded, leads a growing congregation with strong lay support.
The American League formed in Mitchell as fusionists rally behind the Philippine war and Republican institutions. Leaders include Abraham Boynton John Colvin and F H Winsor with W T LaFollette outlining the league while dozens join and others abstain. The nonpartisan framing aims to expand statewide with branches to recruit new adherents.
A populist voices that allegiance to government is inherent, not shown by cards or tags. The statement asserts that devotion to the constitution and independence is an internal trait, not a formal pledge.
A meeting at Pierre decided reappraisal and three year term leases for plowed school and endowment lands across many counties. Leases will be cash rented based on nearby land values to permit continued crop planting. For 1899 common school leases yielded 59,474.77 dollars, up 20,385.35 from the prior year. Endowment lands brought 7,105.19 dollars, up 3,514.50 over the previous year.
Parents and relatives in Sioux Falls hope for the return of fallen soldier Jonas Lien and others from the Philippine Islands. A War Department note says undertakers departed San Francisco on October 25, 1899 to locate and ship remains, with telegraph notice upon arrival and caskets sent to Wells Fargo for government‑paid transport to final burial.
