Mrs. Lucy J. Gott of Srokanki Washington, 27, died at 10 after fearing poison from a medicine she had taken. Doctors say death resulted from fright, not poison, with congestion of the brain listed as the cause.
The House used a six hour debate to stall the pension appropriation bill, with Republicans pushing the limit on debate and Democrats yielding. Mr. Hatch signaled plans to push an anti option and revenue measure if appropriations stall. In the Senate, Quay demanded treasury details on World’s Columbian Exposition funding and Sunday closing conditions, while Allison moved to table action on the exposition items.
New York reports Democrats angry over President-Elect Cleveland's cabinet selections with a plan for a protest. They admire Judge Gresham but oppose his appointment as secretary of state. A coordinated congressional effort to reconsider his invitation may emerge next week. The Neptune rescued crew from the Norwegian bark Knudsvig after it listed and sank. ten aboard were saved.
New York correspondent reports Mrs. Russell Harrison and her daughter left the White House to fumigate rooms. Personal items including bric a brac, a gilt clock, cut glass, clothing, jewelry and notes were said to be destroyed or missing. Major Pruden held a locked iron chest found during the purge. Mr. Harrison seeks answers as health officials search for the missing goods.
The Chicago Great Western intends a $10 million project to build a double track from Oelwein to Chicago with extensions to Sioux City and Omaha and new shops in Dubuque. A trust deed for $80 million to Manhattan Trust is expected to be filed after plans are announced following Mr. Stickney’s New York trip. The Omaha extension is driven by business growth, including 188000 cars over the Dubuque bridge last year.
Ohio Governor William McKinley will address a banquet honoring Lincoln's birthday hosted by the state league of Republican clubs. The event marks the kickoff of the campaign for McKinley’s renomination and for state and legislative offices.
An Illinois Central train struck a sleigh near Waterloo Iowa three miles north of the city. Mrs Fairchild died from injuries and her husband was seriously hurt, found on the engine pilot after the crash.
Joint senate and house committee tour of the St. Cloud reformatory hears from Superintendent Myers about corporal punishments over three years, including six lashings the highest, with cases of severe flogging and a guard knocking a prisoner down. Prisoners testified in executive session as officials refused to name those whipped.
In Pittsburgh on February 15 the O'Donnell trial drew a crowded court. Pinkerton Captain Cooper testified that he saw O'Donnell onshore during barge landings and at surrender, warning against landing as gunfire erupted. Pinkerton James Malloy and witness Burk described threats and orders as the river actions unfolded. Burk contradicted earlier Clifford trial testimony under cross examination.
An 18 year old son of Michael Lynch died after a Pole stabbed him in Amherst, severing the jugular. Sheriff Grey ordered Pinkerton captains to fire only if fired upon. Tensions run high as Irish and Pole factions clash in the region with threats of lynching.
Brevity Tex February 15. Augustine Gonzales, condemned to death for murdering his wife, hanged himself in a local jail. The incident follows his death sentence and prior appeals.
In Jefferson City Missouri on February 18 a gang of masked robbers halted freight No 3 of the Missouri Pacific between Little Blue and Pleasant Hill with a lantern but failed to loot. They intended to target the east bound passenger train later and, after signaling the freight, moved to the caboose to divert a raid. A posse of eight armed guards was posted at Kansas City and later withdrew after no further activity was reported.
August Hoffman Ferdinand Heise and Albert Hoffman were arrested in Wausau Wisconsin on murder charges in the fatal stabbing of William Hersog at a Rib Falls dance. Hersog died from chest wounds and a fractured skull after a quarrel and blows. Albert Hoffman remains at large.
Russia plans a four ship squadron to participate in the Hampton Roads naval display for Chicago expo opening. Admiral Karaikoff will command. Grand Duke Alexis will be nominal lord high admiral. Ships may call at Cherbourg or Brest and visit the Duke of Edinburgh at Davenport.
