A severe blizzard grips the region with frigid winds and drifting snow. Train service suffers across the state with Mitchell area lines failing and groceries strained as deliveries slow and schools suspend plans amid record low temperatures.
Weather bureau reports a fast moving Arctic cold front spreading from the Rocky Mountain area eastward. Temperatures plunge across Montana North Dakota South Dakota Nebraska Minnesota and Iowa with readings from 86 below in Williston North Dakota to 36 below in Havre Montana and windy conditions limit visibility in affected towns. The Northwest faces the harshest conditions while southern states see springlike warmth.
Fair tonight with colder temperatures, especially in the northwest. Thursday brings continued cold but fair weather across the region.
Paris reports the coldest winter in memory with temperatures not above 5 degrees Fahrenheit in the north and 14 in Paris. Nice and Cannes felt frost while Corte registered eleven degrees of frost. Lyons recorded 4 degrees as Nantes port faced freeze despite icebreaker efforts.
A large storm sweeps the state with Aberdeen reporting the worst conditions to date. Rains begin in that city while Mason City sees only rain and sleet. South and east areas fare slightly better as forecasts predict clearing and continued cold, with a sharp temperature drop tonight.

London proposes Britain acquire 200000 acres in Alberta Saskatchewan Manitoba and British Columbia using imperial funds. An imperial board would negotiate with Canada to purchase arable land to be developed with state money. Hamlin county commissioners accept the new county courthouse in Hayti as the county seat. The modern edifice cost about 85000 including furniture and equipment. Ground work will include grading and shade trees with a circuit term planned for February in the new building.
Berlin reports Germany will begin unrestricted naval warfare on the high seas Feb 1. Neutral ships in the barred zone sail at their own risk. ships with prior sailings are protected. Berlin praises Wilson’s peace stance while condemning Allied responses and advises the U.S. to warn citizens against sailing into the zone.
The Polish provisional state council telegrams gratitude to President Wilson for urging an independent Poland in his Senate address. The note credits the speech and hints at changes in the U S administration, naming possible resignations and political shifts behind the scenes.
United States Steel reports net earnings of 353 million for the year, up 205 million from the prior twelve months. The company says gross business exceeded 1.25 billion, far surpassing its 1913 peak of 788 million, and notes a previous record net income in 1907 of 519 million.
Washington reports point to a major cabinet reshuffle in President Wilsons second term with voluntary resignations in the treasury agriculture commerce and possibly state departments. The Russian north front resumed actions along the Rumanian line with gains near the Kimpelung Jacobenn railway and a captured support point near Vale Putna. In Latvia the Germans captured a Russian eastern bank position near the River Aa, taking over 900 prisoners and 15 machine guns. Paris reports French forces penetrated two German trench lines near Leintrey but were repulsed. The transport Admiral Magon bound for Saloniki was torpedoed January 25 with 809 survivors. British January casualty lists show totals for the month.
Mrs. Alice Wheeldon and her two daughters along with Alfred Mason faced Guildhall charges for conspiracy to murder Premier Lloyd George and Arthur Henderson. Prosecutor A. H. Bodkins filed information. After evidence of arrest the case adjourned to Saturday. Wheeldon, 50, lives in Derby with daughter Ann, 27, a teacher. Mason, 24, a Southampton chemist. All denied knowledge and offered no statement.
The report notes January British casualties at 960 officers and 31,394 men, with December figures for 23 days totaling 815 officers and 36,350 men after no lists during Christmas. Since the Somme offensive began the total reaches 525,321. Also Danish steamers Daisy and Puntaleno sunk. crew landed.
