County Treasurer Michael Meir of Woonsocket South Dakota was robbed of 5087 dollars by two masked men who forced him into the vault and bolted him inside. Passersby heard his cries and freed him through a vault window, but no trace of the robbers or getaway method was found.
Bridgewater 3S D reports the public schools will move into a completed brick and stone building after January 1. The eight room facility features a large assembly hall, library, and modern heating and ventilation. Total cost for building and furnishings is $25,000. Dedication is planned around January 15 with Hon. BE L Abel of Huron as principal speaker.
Harrisburg Pa Dec 3 Judge Kunkle fixed April 5 as the start date for the third trial in the capitol furnishings scandal. The indictment alleges conspiracy to defraud the state of 25577 on a 61948 bill for desks. Defendants include John H Sanderson Joseph M Huston W L Mathues W H P Snyder and J S Shumaker.
Belfast dispatch says Dame Melba rewarded a modest newsboy named Pollock who spread papers along her route to keep her feet dry. Her friends tracked him down and verified his good character. After she learned his address she sent a letter of thanks.

New York December 30 The sub committee of the national monetary commission led by Senator Aldrich and Senator Teller along with Representative Vreeland visited New York to confer with statisticians and writers for the commission rather than to consult Wall Street bankers on currency matters. Secretary Arthur B. Shelton said the trip aims to gather data for the commission.
Dr. Nils Hanson, formerly of Des Moines and Ames and now at the Brookings agricultural school, travels from Siberia as a special agent for the Department of Agriculture. He sent Secretary Wilson a carload of seeds of grass wheat barley and legumes from central and northern Siberia suited to dry cold climates, promising advances in dry land farming.

Sioux Falls Dec 29 Judge J W Jones holds that George W Egan is not eligible to hold the office of state's attorney elected in November after disbarment for alleged unprofessional conduct tied to the Julia Ann O Grady case The ruling creates a vacancy effective January 1 to be filled by appointment by the county commissioners The judge states he believes the defendant was and remains disqualified to hold the office and judgment should be entered accordingly.
Lansing Dec 2 The Ohio and Michigan Southern company with a 17 million dollar capital was incorporated to take over the Toledo Ann Arbor and Detroit railway and has a trolley line project within Toledo and Ann Arbor. Toledo Ohio December 25 The strike breaker Toler who shot and killed an Iowa Central striker at Marshalltown ABS summer was acquitted of murder by a Tama county jury after only 35 minutes deliberation. Lincoln, Dec 30. W. D. O Grady, Rock Island night agent, says Joel B. Clark and Charles Devorah tried to hold up the baggage room after arriving on a westbound train. Clark was wounded in the leg and captured. Devorah fled aboard a freight car but was forced off by police. Both men deny robbery. Clark cites intoxication.
Lincoln Nebraska December 39. Liloyd Sharpe and Otis Leggett were arrested at Minden on suspicion of involvement in the Keene Gibbons and Ceresco bank robberies ten days ago. Sheriff Ransom has wired Hastings authorities to arrest Albert W Carr, third suspect. Officers search Carrs home in Minden for stolen plunder.
Ranger Maine reports the 1909 hunting season closed with about 10 000 deer 400 moose and numerous birds and small animals killed in Maine woods. Deer numbers up from 1907 while moose decline and human fatalities rise. Weather hindered transport of game and 45 percent of the harvest came from out of state hunters paying $15 license.
Washington reports that in 1908 most of the 25 principal nations saw lower exports and imports. Only four nations boosted exports while the United States faced a drop of about 300 million in imports and roughly 150 million in exports amid a global downturn.
An 11 person group of Chinese were discovered by a Southwestern railroad employee in a Durant New Mexico box car. They were supplied with water and provisions and had been sealed in the car from Red Lands California to Chicago. Immigration inspectors believe the group was placed in El Paso and view this as evidence of an organized smuggling operation.
