Pierre South Dakota December 24 the state pardon board recommended a Christmas pardon for Thomas Hall who was sent from Hamlin county about twenty years ago on a murder charge. The board deemed the showing favorable and will consider other applications tomorrow.
Washington D C Dec 24 The treasury has not ruled on whether the last war revenue law exempts senators and representatives from the excess profits tax. Senator Sterling introduced a bill to remove any doubt that lawmakers are exempt from the excess profits tax by clarifying the law. He stressed the 1917 income tax applies to them and that the excess profits provision is the only possible point of dispute. The debate suggested no intent to evade taxes by lawmakers when enacting the war revenue bill.
Ames Jones of Hurley learns his brother Carl Jones, an aviator with the French front air service, is missing after an aerial engagement with German fliers. C. C. Ross, another aviator, reports Jones was shot down over German lines and presumed dead or captured.
Bloodhounds traced a thief who broke into Thompson Bros hardware in Wolsey and stole watches and goods. The pursuing dogs followed the trail to a house. the thief confessed and repaid losses, with no arrest made.
Washington announces the foreign mail censorship is now in full force under a board including the post office, war and navy departments, the war trade board, and the committee on public information. Branch offices in New York, the Panama Canal Zone, and Puerto Rico will carry on the work with minimal interference to legitimate correspondence. The program began November 4, and secrecy was lifted at government request. The censorship cooperates with British and French censorship and will merge with wireless and cable censorship.
Reports from Washington show some Red Cross divisions exceeded their quotas in the 10,000,000 member campaign. The central division raised its goal to 4,500,000 and expects to exceed it while the Gulf division covering Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi went several thousand over its target.
