Torpedoed and Surviving Gunner Fred Arundel Story Told
An uncle of H. Arundel of 202 North Main Street recounts the sinking of the Hermes, a British warship destroyed by a German submarine on November 1 in the English Channel. Fred Arundel, the ship’s head gunner, escaped in a dramatic sequence as torpedoes struck and lifebuoys were improvised. He saved his money with a mess mate, then leapt overboard and clung to life until rescue at Dover and Chatham. The tale, relayed by relatives, also notes the following coffee shop and dairy exhibit updates from Ames and state events.
