R G Buschwiler and KS Jordan, ex students of the University of South Dakota at Vermillion, were released from the penitentiary in Sioux Falls after Governor Crawford granted pardons. They had confessed to burning West hall and several neglected shacks, pleaded guilty, and received five year sentences. They served sixteen and a half months before freedom.
Pierre S D Aug 29 The caisson wrecked by spring high water has been righted paving the way for the Chicago and Northwestern railway steel bridge over the Missouri river to be completed and rails connected the week of September 16. The post office department acting at Senator Wittredge's request will route Black Hills mail via the new line starting Saturday shortening delivery by two days. The railroad will receive the maximum rate until adjustments are made.
Aug 29. Lowry gains rail link with Minneapolis and St Louis lines. Citizens focus on construction sounds, not fireworks, as 400000 bushels of grain are expected to move locally this season. Natural gas emerges as a key resource with farmers already using it for lighting and heating. Colonel J H Homes of Aberdeen and H S Heynes of Brentford organize the Farmers State Bank, opening ahead of formal doors.
Mrs. George Bishop of Hetland Arlington South Dakota was badly burned when her clothing caught fire Sunday afternoon. She ran from the bedroom and her husband rolled her on the ground to extinguish the flames. The upper body was severely burned and doctors fear she cannot recover. It is believed a lamp tipped onto her clothing during toilet preparations.
Sturgis South Dakota August 27 Patsy Rhyn is named as the young man killed near his wagon in the Slim Butte country. Nearby to the scene, 130 head of sheep are missing after a counting. No connection established between the theft and the death.
Arlington South Dakota reports the drowning of Griffith son of D D Guimth a farmer living north of town while swimming with friends at Lake Poinsett. Divers and dragging parties failed to recover the body.
Bangor Pennsylvania reports anti vaccination sentiment grows as 1000 sign protest against enforcing vaccination law. School board asks state superintendent for guidance while vowing to stand firm. He advises obedience to law and to present case to Health Commissioner Dr Samuel Dixon rather than face prosecution.
Onida South Dakota August 28 The Commercial club forms a three member committee to visit St Paul and press Great Northern to extend its line from Aberdeen to Pierre. If no progress is made they will meet Minneapolis and St Louis officials. The 18 year old Pierce grade from Onida to Aberdeen remains unimproved though ready for ironing. Onida, county seat, lacks a railroad and desires direct connection to the Twin Cities.
R Davyen port civil engineer for the government visited Browns Valley to study a canal linking Lakes Traverse and Big Stone to form a reservoir for spring floods in the Red river valley. Committees from White Rock Ortonville Wheaton and other towns will meet soon. Davenport calls the plan feasible. Joe Shoemaker's farm residence burned for a loss of 2500.
The South Dakota State Horticultural society and the Black Hills Horticultural society plan a joint session at the Belle Fourche fair on September 6. The eastern delegation will bring the most experienced fruit men, while the western region will send leading practitioners of the same work.
A Jack the Ripper is active near Bruce S D Aug 28. The killer targets animals not people, slashing two horses owned by Ole Erickson in a pasture. One horse is badly wounded and likely to die. the assailant’s identity remains unknown.
J W Arnold Jr and J F Sheran of Ipswich led efforts to secure right of way across Faulk county with a preliminary meeting of farmers and business men. St Lawrence businessmen guarantee 9000 dollars to secure Hand county path as surveyors near Pembina ND. Backers include prominent South Dakota and New York figures such as US Senator Robert J Gamble.
Rapid City South Dakota August 28 In addition to three days of railroad celebration September 5 6 and 7 the annual picnic of the Black Hills pioneers society is set for September 6 The big day will feature special trains with low rates from the Northern Hills Governor Crawford Congressman Parker and ex Congressman Martin will attend to welcome dwindling membership which stands at 120 in good standing
Vermillion S D August 28 vice President Fairbanks has accepted an invitation to address the South Dakota Methodist Episcopal conference meeting in this city October 19.
In Sturgis South Dakota on August 27 22 year old Mike Henry enraged by liquor and an imagined grievance shot out lights at M J Carneys ranch house on White Owl creek and later tried to kill Wes Carney. Henry was killed by a double barreled shotgun blast from Wes Carney who fired after Henry drew his gun. Sheriff Stewart and Coroner MecSloy were summoned to the scene.
Highmore South Dakota issues an ordinance forbidding flirting on church steps, public walkways, and alleys. The law targets minors and adults, with police enforcing arrests and penalties including fines or confinement. The measure, approved by Mayor J. I. McDonald, takes effect after two weeks in the official paper.
Bonesteel S D Aug 27 A local anonymous letter writer has created unrest by targeting prominent residents including two leading businessmen. The letters aim to sow jealousy and disgrace and implicate a well known Bonesteel editor who has long opposed local crime. The editor offers a 5090 reward for information leading to the writer’s arrest.
Postmaster A M Jury reports the railway mail route will serve Rosebud towns west of Donesteel up to Gregory starting September 9. Dailis, the farthest town, will still rely on stage delivery until the railroad reaches it, with expansion expected soon after.
Bark beetle has devastated Black Hills timber for seven years. Forest officials estimate timber losses to South Dakota exceed 1.5 million dollars, with gate receipts lost to the bug. Officials report the bark beetle may disappear from the Black Hills National Forest within a year. A second, smaller insect from the Towiteusa family is also being fought by forest service workers.
Reports from Lamro and Burke South Dakota on August 26 indicate the coming proclamation by President Roosevelt opening the Tripp county Rosebud reservation. Isaac Foreday a farmer near Peever South Dakota was struck by a binder bolt during tightening. The spring driven bolt pierced his hand and lodged near the chest over the heart, narrowly missing fatal injury. He is reputed to be the only person in the country stabbed by a bolt.
State board cut bank stock valuations by over a half million dollars for counties. Aggregate 1907 valuation fell $133,000 from 1906. Aurora county shows none of this property. Stanley county filings under water rights are being canceled as many filings were made to hold land for friends or for speculation. The Bonilla State Bank at Bontie Beadle county filed articles of incorporation with $5,000 capital.
Aberdeen shippers and jobbers win clearance for an interchange railroad track after years of dispute. Boards and courts delayed action, legislature fixed a defective law, and railroads including the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul Great Northern and Minneapolis St Louis plan to build the track, with completion expected early September in Sioux Falls.
At the twenty eighth annual Black Hills Methodist conference in Hot Springs South Dakota the education committee recommended redeeming the old Black Hills college property for 13000 dollars with Hot Springs raising seven thousand. A 10000 dollar bid was suggested for a clear title plus a five thousand dollar repair fund and six thousand for first year running expenses. The school is to open September 1 next year with two directors in Hot Springs and two in Mitchell.
Nelson Morris, the Chicago meatpacker, has leased over 750000 acres northeast of Rapid City on the Standing Rock Indian reservation. He replaces the L7 outfit, which held the lease for nearly a decade and fenced the land five years ago. Morris has moved 5000 cattle to the area and plans to bring in more, marking his first feeding of northern holdings.
Two masked highwaymen held up twelve harvest hands sleeping in a freight car on the Northwestern track in Groton South Dakota. They took $30 and escaped with the loot.
