Washington August 23 I marry T Cook aged about twenty one and Charles I Cook his brother some years younger were arrested here this afternoon the former for forgery and the younger for collusion Their plan was novel and could have run indefinitely Harry the discount clerk at the Columbia National Bank used an assumed name to open a second account and forged a depositor’s name to checks payable to himself The checks were deposited and paid then destroyed The culprits are sons of the late Prof Cook of this city The forged name is John R McLean The amount involved is $2024.
Warner reports early today Mrs. J. H. Miller of this place suffered fatal burns while lighting a gasoline stove. Her clothing caught fire, causing injuries so severe she died four hours later. Authorities said she was a longtime resident and the incident remains under investigation.
The woman died after a brief illness, remaining conscious to the end and showing no pain after the first ten minutes. She leaves a heart-broken husband and infant twins. Her remains will be interred in the cemetery tomorrow as the community extends sympathy.
In Dover New Hampshire on August 22 workers at Martin French and Co. shoe factory walked out after the firm refused to discharge two stitchers who were not union members. The action involved highly skilled stitchers and other factory employees demonstrating against the company’s labor policy.

Marshall Illinois, August 23. A man named Sankey living near West York Crawford county found a strange package, opened it, and cartridges exploded injuring him. He lost a hand and may die. Authorities suspect the cartridges contain dynamite.
On Aug 23, Northern Pacific and Manitoba unveiled new grain rates. Fargo Southern points see about three cents cut to align with the new schedule. Regions on the Northern Pacific northwest of Brainard keep Minneapolis and Duluth rates unchanged, while the Little Falls division offers a lower rate to Minneapolis.

Brooklyn detectives arrest the 73 year old husband on a murder charge after the 71 year old wife Gertrude Gross is found dead in bed with a hatchet wound. The couple had endured unhappiness for some time.
Anna Peterson, two months in the country, was assaulted by two youths while walking with a boy on the outskirts of Marquette.
