Residents see the Carnegie library project taking shape as architect Dow completes a drawing and a half tone photograph is released. Excavation is nearly finished and stone laying will start in about two weeks with Scheurenbrand coordinating stone dressers to accelerate the work. Carnegie donated 10,000 dollars toward the construction.
The proposed Mitchell library will be built with Spencer granite giving a massive look. Its sixty six foot Third street frontage and well proportioned height frame a prominent city center view. A 20 by 28 annex on the south end will store books. Interior finishes will be red oak. The city has appropriated 1000 dollars yearly to maintain it as the city hall rises on the south end, with grounds and trees to enhance the block, creating a centerpiece for visitors.
For six months talk has centered on a new town northwest of Mitchell about 74 miles in Badger township. Geo A Johnston leads the project, with a Milwaukee Railway switch planned at the site. A grain elevator, under L N Loomis, is to be first built by mid September, followed by several minor industries. Farmers welcome the venture as a business district expands. Johnston plans no immediate land plotting.
Fred Widmann has altered his contemplated hotel project by switching from brick to granite and increasing the size of the structure. The project now is expected to cost about 355,000, with Dow consulted on the revised plans and an additional lot purchased to expand the site.
The project will use the entire 100 by 142 foot plot, rising three stories above a basement. Foundations are sized to allow two additional stories later, enabling expansion as city demand grows. Initial plan includes 75 rooms. Stone work on the foundation is to begin this fall, with spring to resume and completion aimed soon after.
Commander T E Blanchard announces South Dakota G A R headquarters will be at the Els mere in Washington for the national encampment. Lodging at 1 50 per day, two large parlors secured for G A R and W R C, and a departure list requested to gauge trip interest.
Democrats discuss potential nominees ahead of the county convention set for September 13. Abraham Boynton is named for a legislative seat, Larry Byrnes is favored for sheriff, Frank Stearns may seek register of deeds, Gus Helgerson is mentioned for auditor, H. E. Hitchcock touted as states attorney, George Kanouff for clerk of courts, E. S. Johnston eyed for probate judge, Jos. Koch and Anglus Gerken or Bielfeldt discussed for county commissioner, with John Quirk likely in the fifth district race.
Grass in South Dakota range country west of the Missouri River has been eaten bare by cattle, causing a grass famine. William Conness of Lyman County estimates 1,500 head of cattle and notes 100,000 Texans were moved in this year. Stockmen anticipate buying/ranching, plan fencing, and seeking new water sources as ranges fail and artesian wells are considered. Many buyers cross the river to acquire smaller ranches east of the Missouri.
