Bankers Convention resolves on silver coinage and fugitives

Destructive Escape Attempt at Anamosa Penitentiary

Four convicts attempted to break from the Iowa state penitentiary at Anamosa. Paddy Ryan, serving six years, was killed by a shot to the heart. Mitchell, sentenced for life for a murder on a Cedar Rapids bridge, was wounded and may die. Lankins, jailed for ten years for murder, escaped unharmed. one attacker got through the damaged west gate as guards repelled the break. The wardens and citizens praise the guards for effective vigilance.

American journalist and Sam Field cite Cutting jail case in Paso del Norte

Boiler explosion kills six in Ashland carpentry shop

A boiler in Periier & Webster's carpentry shop exploded after a boiler issue left the injector inoperative. Five men and a boy were killed instantly and two were wounded. The blast demolished the boiler house and caused about $3,000 in losses, shrouding the city in gloom.
