The bank pledges protection for depositors under all circumstances. It insures against reckless speculation and get rich quick fever. Profits are claimed to come from prudent conservative management with no danger. Prospective patrons are invited to inquire about strength and stability.
Report cites Board of Control members J. W. Latta of Pierre F. J. Purdy of Mitchell and J. W. McBride urging wage increases for state fire department personnel. A fatal accident left a boy dead after a fall while harvesting. neighbors paused work to attend his funeral and assist farmer Fletcher.
Lead Henry Mossman of Chamberlain and A A Grant of Yankton led a morning session reviewing audits from the prior administration. The board discussed proposed legislative asks, including boosting the fire department tournament appropriation from 1000 to 2500 dollars yearly and raising mutual insurance company rates from 1 1 2 percent to 2 percent on local departments. A social reception followed. Dawes praises the Mitchell Short Course plan to move Agriculture forward and urges farmer attendance.
Ipswich eight teen boy hunters were nearly killed when Frank Smith fired a shotgun at a tree and at Melvin Jaquith. The shot tore a hole in Jaquith’s side at the Marcus Beebe picnic grounds. Ed Gillick alerted town, Dr. C S Bobb rushed Jaquith to hospital. recovery hopes remain guarded after surgery in Aberdeen.
Eleven year old Dewey Fletcher, son of Fred Fletcher, of Reliance, was killed when his foot became entangled in a horse’s bridle while riding with his sister in a pasture. The animal dragged him as the horse shied, ending in the boy’s instant death.
Pierre South Dakota State Game Warden Bancroft reports a request from the National warden in charge of Montana to join efforts to create a national game preserve from Slim Butte Cave Hills and Short Pine Forest Reserve in Harding County. The move would protect deer under forest ranger control and permit the deer population to grow. Bancroft has not decided but leans toward supporting the suggestion. County wardens warn locals that last year licenses expired July first and new licenses are required this year to hunt legally.
In Tokio the floods that caused extensive damage are reported to have eased the death toll to about 700, with the total likely in the thousands. Unsanitary conditions threaten an epidemic as the famine worsens and even affluent residents receive government aid.
A memorial to the interior department and the president was prepared at a meeting in Huron on behalf of Lemon land district homesteaders in North and South Dakota affected by a coal land withdrawal order. Local land officers refuse to issue patents pending guidance, citing unknown coal lands. The memorial argues patents may be issued for lands containing coal, and that pre order homesteads remain unaffected. Delegates Berry and Norton travel to Washington to press the case.
In Huron South Dakota a ninth circuit case by James B Wescott against American Car Equipment of Chicago tests incorporation law. Wescott sues on notes for stock and challenges stock owned by four Chicago men. Attachment on stock served on Huron representative Philip Lawrence. Jurisdiction question whether suit may be brought in Huron or must be filed in Chicago.
Food and Drug Commissioner reports F. M. Slagle & Co. lumber dealers were fined 50 dollars and costs in Elk Point justice court for selling adulterated linseed oil. The oil, manufactured by Central Linseed Oil Co of Omaha, was one third kerosene, marking the fourth such prosecution that summer.
Alfred Nelson, a Swede, was held up by Joe DeMott and Charles Bayne on a railroad bridge near Alexandria, tied to a tale of a threshing crew and robbed of about 645. Nelson recovered enough to tell the night watch. DeMott and Bayne were captured days later and jailed after Nelson identified them. Nelson suffered severe head and facial injuries but is not in immediate danger.
Pierre S. D. reports Howard Simpson will become superintendent of the state school for the deaf. The board cites fitness and Simpson's familiarity with sign language and the institution as key factors, amid suggestions of political influence around the prior superintendent's departure.
