She has enlisted Colonel C O Knudson to press for a court hearing arguing the ban on insanity should be lifted and her children returned. While most locals oppose her, supporters appear to back Knudson’s bid for liberation.

Canton South Dakota August 13 The State Pharmaceutical association opened last evening in the Canton opera house. Great interest and a lively gathering anticipated with many leading members present or en route. Exhibits of samples from jobbing houses in Minneapolis St Paul Omaha Kansas City Des Moines Chicago New York and other points shown at the convention.

It blames cheap Panama hats for the “slovenliness,” saying wearers miss proper styling and that the influx from the continent risks leaving a negative impression of the city. In Bridgewater South Dakota August 12 Joseph Hofer an aged respected resident south of town was thrown headfirst from a buggy struck by the wheel fracturing his skull. He died soon after while pinned under the seat with his head dangling between spokes. A local delegation later paid tribute at L Pritzhau home presenting a gold headed cane.
Bruce Sikes about 19 was arrested in Spearfish on a Missouri rape charge. Sheriff J L D Johnson transported him back. Sikes earlier used the alias Smith and told Driscoll Bros. he and an accomplice overpowered a young woman. Both suspects fled before capture. the accomplice is at large.
Sioux Falls in South Dakota reports Albert Gauck, a mail carrier between Fort Randall and Fairfax, bit by a large rattlesnake. With no nearby doctor, he used a pocketknife to remove flesh at the fangs, a bold act that preserved his life and allowed him to resume duties. In Kimball, W. T. La Follette, editor of the Chamberlain Journal, is practicing physical culture after a bout of breakdown, aided by his brother Governor La Follette.
Range shipments began Saturday with fifty cattle cars from ranches across the Missouri. Heavy shippers included Sylvia, Stearns and Babcock. An eleven car horses special went to the Omaha market, pushing total head bought in six weeks to over five thousand.

Aug 12 Pierre S D reports the first threshing results are highly favorable with wheat averaging 30 bushels per acre, barley 60, oats 80, potatoes 100, and hay prospects improving. Ranchers on the Cheyenne river note grasses thriving after recent rains easing fears of a short crop. Western state grasses are ranking high, promising good forage for winter livestock barring prairie fires.
Canton South Dakota hosts the State Pharmaceutical association convention with about 200 members and many traveling salesmen. The gathering features sports and entertainments including a grand baseball tournament with prizes and purses for top teams from across the state and beyond.

Secretary Root plans to resign the War Department before sailing to London to consult with the Alaskan boundary commission. He intends to hand his resignation to President Roosevelt, with action upon it possibly delayed until after Congress reconvenes. The successor is expected to be Taft, depending on Root’s plans and the department’s needs.
Miss Mamie Decks testified in Millidgeville that Warden Allagood whipped her in June over alleged indecent proposals to the warden’s wife and her resistance. She described being whipped across the hips, bruised for weeks, and forced to work in the sun. Her account was supported by other inmates, while Allagood called the charges false and said the whipping was mild and medically approved.
Fort Plain New Jersey August 13 Henry F Spalding 45 a West Orange New Jersey automobilist fell into the Erie canal towpath four miles east of the village while maneuvering to avoid a lineman s rig on a muddy path He and his car plunged into the water Linemen attempted rescue but the rope slipped and Spalding drowned The body was recovered tangled in the rope the car remained undamaged with brakes set
Washington Aug 13 The weather bureau weekly summary notes very low temperatures in northern districts east of the Rockies slow crop growth and maturity while rains are general and well distributed elsewhere. The upper Ohio and lower Missouri valleys need rain. eastern gulf coast and southeast Minnesota suffer from excess moisture. Corn advance is good in central and western belt but outlook weaker in upper Ohio valley and middle Atlantic states. Spring wheat harvest slowed by rain. North Dakota sees development aided by late rains. Chinch bugs and rust plague southern Minnesota. oats harvest nearly finished with yields disappointing. Soil suitable for fall plowing and progress rapid.
One hundred fifty aboard the steamer Alice Stafford bound for Grand Haven Michigan faced a terrifying night when a violent Lake Michigan storm blew out safety valves. Passengers rushed the deck in nightwear while stokers refused to fire. Assistant engineer Robert Manners extinguished fires as the boat rolled twelve hours. Crew burned kerosene blankets to signal help and St Joseph towed the vessel to port by noon.

San Francisco August 13 The Examiner reports Dr August Groth a seasoned aeronaut has just ascended in a home built dirigible balloon. He remained attached to ground cables but claimed full control guiding the airship up and down and around. Three elevations occurred with the craft praised by witnesses and the inventor despite the ground tether.
Federal Judge Munger issued a mandamus ordering Union Pacific to allow Chicago Great Western Railway use of the Missouri River bridge and terminal facilities in Omaha and South Omaha, Nebraska, effective immediately. The decision grants access to the bridge and associated terminals, resolving a long running dispute between the carriers.
