Rivalry over wife ends in murder in Mount Vernon

Harry Long died from bullet wounds after a nighttime gunfight on a lawn with his wife present. Lee Salyern, his cousin, was jailed for the murder. At today’s examination, prosecutors said Long and Salyern had rivaled for Mrs. Long’s hand and that Salyern vowed to kill Long in a letter replying to an invitation to the wedding. Salyern had traveled from a New Haven, Illinois farm the day before.

Wendling the Murderer of Child Is Taken

Joseph Wendling, wanted in Louisville for the murder of Alma Kellner, was captured in San Francisco today. He was the janitor at the church where the girl was last seen before her body was found in a sewer near the church.
