The Rosebud reservation opening appears increasingly likely as federal action considers a 23 township sale in Gregory and Lyman counties. Secretary Hitchcock may send an inspector to discuss acquisition of the eastern portion with a favorable view from the Rosebud Indians and South Dakota’s delegation. The move would unlock about 450000 acres for white settlement, shifting land use from grazing to agricultural development while preserving trust payments for the tribe.
