He knocks down passengers and is restrained by Conductor Ashman and others. Hayes is taken to the county hospital after injuries from glass. He will be confined in an asylum in Otsego Michigan. his brother A S Hayes accompanied him.
A. B. Garttson and W. T. Newman warn that a strike may occur if Northern Pacific does not concede wage increases. Negotiations falter as the company stands by its position, and a poll of trainmen will be taken if no agreement is reached today.

Rich young man Moses Fowler Chase of Lafayette Indiana, recently found in a Paris area sanitarium by Consul General Gowdy, arrived in New York on the Kron Prinz Wilhelm from Cherbourg. A tug met the steamer at quarantine and Chase proceeded to Jersey City to catch a train west.
The patrol boat Governor Morton was commissioned to protect non union crews against intimidation following striking marine firemen. It will meet incoming vessels to safeguard their crews as several non union firemen were beaten early today in Buffalo New York.
In Washington on April 16 the state department sought a German statement of facts regarding the deportation from Iceland of Ruk and Peonate, two Caroline group natives, and students from an American missionary school there. Rev Judson Smith of the American Board of Missions presented the matter.

In New York on April 16 a murdered man was found inside a barrel on Hast Seventh Street. The victim, described as Italian, had a cut throat and was discovered by a woman on her way to work. Police believe the body was meant to be dumped but hidden instead. An address on the barrel and a note in Italian were found, along with a perfumed handkerchief. 200 Italians viewed the remains but could not identify him.
Chicago April 16 railroads have filed notices with the Interstate Commerce Commission and Western Freight Association to reduce certain freight classes. Analysts say open violation could trigger competing lines to deepen cuts, undermining the law's three day notice for decreases and ten day notice for increases.

John T F Young a New York photographer clashed with builder John Caddle on a Third Avenue elevated car. Young said he acted to protect a woman from insult after Caddle ogled a passenger. Magistrate Zeller deemed the act hasty but well meant and dismissed the case after Young apologized.
