Secretary upholds local land claim in Devils Lake case
The Inter Ocean reports that Secretary Lamar reversed Commissioner Sparks on a suspended homestead entry by James W. Connella, siding with the local officers. Connella entered May 19, 1884, proved August 5, 1884, and established residence August 4, 1883, despite winters away from the site. The Bank of Devils Lake had purchased the land after Connella’s proof.

Dakota University closes second term with growing progress
Mitchell citizens hail Dakota University as it concludes its second term amid early startup challenges. Despite a partially finished building and winter heating delays, President Dr. Brush was mostly absent, leaving Prof Eastman and colleagues to organize classes in preparatory scientific and classical departments plus bookkeeping and commercial law. Dormitories, dining facilities, and music instruction under Miss Lynn and Mr. H Day with wife enhance student life. The closing term begins next Monday.
