Mount Leonard Peonage Case Divulges Uncertain Fate
The Mount Leonard peonage case collapsed after testimony about Mary Kays a long treated, neglected enslaved woman. Witnesses described decades of servitude under Mrs. Kays, her daughter Muggelis Weaver, and others, with Mary claiming she kept no wages while receiving clothes and cash from a hidden reserve. The accuser Martha Robinson asserted mistreatment. Mary and Muggelis shared scattered memories of Oklahoma life, schooling, and authority figures. Commissioner Nuckols and others observed the uncertain future Mary faces upon Mrs. Kays's death, including potential inheritance from the estate.
