James Velorous Dilley died at his sister Mrs A T Keyton's home Sunday at 7.39 PM after a 27 year struggle with consumption. A 53 year old lifelong bachelor, he lived with his brother and sister. He joined Fish Creek Baptist Church about thirty years ago and lived a devoted Christian life. Funeral by Rev J N Wyn was held at Fish Creek Cemetery. Written by a loving writer.

Miss Myrtle Hooper Dies After Illness in Nelson
Miss Myrtle Hooper died at her sister Mrs Reese Haggard’s home on September first after a brief pneumonia illness. Born January 2 1873 near Ridge Prairie she moved to Nelson with her parents seven years ago and joined the Christian Church young. Rev C Q Shouse baptized her and preached her funeral. James D aged 63 died at his brother in law Madison Koyton home on the L A Smith farm northwest of Slater last Sunday and was buried at Fish Creek Church Monday at 2 o clock. He was the son of Martin Dilley an early county resident and had lived here all his life. For two years he had been an invalid.

Mrs Maggie Baum aged 20 died at home in Kansas City last Saturday from complications of childbirth. She was sister-in-law to Mrs J. T. Plattner of Grand Pass. Mr. and Mrs Plattner attended the funeral in Grand Pass on Monday, and she had many friends there.

Brakeman Found Dead Near Boonville on River Route
Brakeman J. R. Spillers on freight train No. 79 of the Mo. Pac. river route was found dead beside the track near Boonville on Tuesday. It is believed he fell from his train and his lower body was badly mangled.

Storm Damage Strikes Several Farms in Local Area
Saturday night’s storm caused a barn on Mrs. J. A. Justices place near the Colony to burn after a lightning strike. The dairy barn stored 47 tons hay 22 tons straw and oats and corn. Insurance of 600 covered part of the loss. A cow was killed by lightning on W. W. Kents farm. John Cromley lost a burn on the Wal ter Webb farm southwest of town. Wind also toppled trees in Wilton Springs.

Lightning Wreaks Havoc Around Slater Wednesday Night
Slater area reported widespread losses from a Wednesday night lightning storm. A. G. Barton logged about 15 tons of baled hay at his northwest Slater home and Henry Leimkuchler suffered stock losses. Dock MacLain’s residence had fire damage to the flue and plastering. Mrs. Bailey’s Slater home occupied by 8 T. Taylor was damaged about 50. Floyd Carr in Ayres neighborhood lost a valuable mare bought for 228 with no insurance. Most other losses were insured.

Road District Wins Special Election by Wide Margin
The special road district election held Saturday drew light turnout but strong support. The tally stood 607 in favor and 207 against the proposition, with opponents arguing against city autonomy from the county. Proponents promised better roads beyond the eight mile limit and implied funds could be used without bonds.
Highest Price For a Farm near Malta Bend
Mrs. M. L. Waller of Kansas City sold the 308 acre Waller farm west of Malta Bend to Dan Robertson for 964,680. The price is said to be the highest paid for a farm in Saline County and the property, formerly the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Waller, lies in Malta Bend’s western suburbs with solid improvements. Possession is slated for October.

Frank Pemberton of New Frankfort recounted a freight train wreck near Bates City Monday evening. His son John and engineer Mr. Johnson of Slater jumped before the crash, leaping 18 feet down an embankment. Pemberton suffered a head injury and loss of four hours but is improving. Johnson sprained an ankle and sustained bruises. The cause cited was a block system failure and missing flag signals. engine and eleven cars were wrecked.
