Jonn tS Peavler died at his home in Marshall on Friday August 10 1900 at 4 20 p m aged 72 years 3 months 8 days after a year long battle with cancer Born Knox County Kentucky May 2 1828 he lived with his parents until 19 then moved to Sullivan County Missouri He served in the Seventh Kentucky Infantry and fought at Wild Cat Vicksburg Champion Hill Arkansas Post and Big Black Water He witnessed the surrender of Vicksburg He married twice first to Louisa Bull then Mary Davis and had six children surviving He was a Grand Army of the Republic member The funeral was held at his residence with ministers Rev Geo W Shepherd and Rev O S Rusell The procession to Mt Carmel burial drew many neighbors and friends The pallbearers were Dr Christian Abe Krumans L H Hightshoe J D Sanger Levi Hagan and J A Justice The obituary notes his faith and peaceful death with condolences to his family A second item reports the five month old son of Mr and Mrs W E White dying of stomach trouble and a Mrs R Richart dying near Napton with large surviving families

Drowned While Asleep on Steam Boat at Glasgow
A man from Arrow Rock named Alex Williams fell from a steam boat into the river while asleep. His body was recovered the next day and sent to Arrow Rock for his funeral held on Sunday. He was about 30, son of Burton Williams, an Odd Fellow and respected citizen.

Fatal Shooting Over Grayson Daughters Near Elmwood
A fatal shooting occurred Saturday evening August 1 near Elmwood when N B Wright killed Lon Grayson son of Lexington after a quarrel over Grayson's daughters. Inquest by Prosecuting Attorney Lynch and Coroner Crear found Wright responsible. Wright was jailed. Local illness notes follow, including Miss Louisa Hart and Miss Mary Sappington.

Storm Leaves Trail of Destruction in Marshall Township
Thunderstorm last Thursday noon struck farms near Marshall. A horse named Young Dean died, along with Herod McGregor the stallion and two mares valued in the thousands. Cattle owner Peter Holmes lost three steers and a cow under a cottonwood struck by lightning. County farm tool house suffered slight damage and Rev. Geo Shepherd’s residence took a near miss with lines torn loose. Telephone service was knocked out briefly.
