Straw Feeding Guidelines For Cattle And Calves
Mr Brown lays out straw as a feed value with supplement details. For cows, 1 500 000 units of injectable vitamin A every 90 days or 20 000 IU daily. good straw may need no protein if mature. Poor straw needs 0.5 to 1 lb of 32 percent protein supplement. growing animals require more. Replacement heifers get 1 lb of 32 percent protein and 5–8 lb grain daily. grain amount varies by straw type and size. Protein concentrate: 35 percent with barley straw and 40 percent with wheat straw. Calves mirror replacement diets but with higher grain. Late-pregnancy cows may use same diet if condition is maintained or grain increased if needed. All cattle can access blue salt and minerals year round. Caution on nitrate poisoning in green oat straw. ripe oat straw less risky. Submit straw samples to University of Manitoba lab for tailored guidance. Free straw is ideal, but scarce feed can cut straw to 5 lb for growing animals with higher grain.
