Manitoba Seeks Foundation Forage Seed Applications
Farm applications for Foundation forage seed varieties from the Canadian Forage Seeds Project are now available through the Manitoba Department of Agriculture with a December 31 deadline. Seed distributed on a first come first serve basis, with provincial allocations limiting guaranteed supply. The project, a collaboration of government, universities and seed traders, aims to boost pedigreed forage varieties in Canada and maintain adequate certified seed stocks. Prices for certified seed are expected to rise as trends favor pedigreed seed, and growers are advised to switch from commercial to pedigreed forage production. Further details are available from the Ag Rep office or the Soils and Crops Branch in Winnipeg.

Fertilizer yields and costs highlighted by Fehr
Mr Fehr explains barley and wheat fertilizer economics in Manitoba. At $1.75 a bushel for barley, six bushels cover production. Average yield gains are about 25 bushels per acre for barley and 15 for wheat with the recommended rate, yielding profits of about 19 and 11 bushels respectively. Higher than average responses are possible with up to 90 pounds of nitrogen, and he urges farmers to buy fertilizer now even without soil tests, planning field adjustments later. Soil testing and mailing boxes are available from Ag Rep offices, fertilizer dealers, and the provincial soil analysis service at the University of Manitoba.
