District Happenings Births and Weekend Visits

Car la Heather, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs Greg Cloake, was born at Birtle Hospital on September 24, 1961. Venda Pierce spent the weekend at her home. Mr and Mrs WE Forster and Marlene from the Pas spent the weekend at the H E Forster home. Mrs Russell Maduke and Shelly are holidaying at the J Maduke home. Mr and Mrs W Rattray spent Sunday at the H E Forster home.

Community Notes From Arrow River And Brandon Visit

Miss Jessie Elliott of Brandon visited Mr and Mrs A Hill for a few days. Several from the community attended the Hospital Tea at Hamiota. Visitors toured the new hospital wing decorated with autumn flowers. Promotions were conducted at Sunday School. Holstein heifer of R E Heise won first in its class and grand champion at a Winnipeg dairy show. Mrs J T Finkbeiner and Mrs J Rankin attend a Manitoba Women’s Hospital Auxiliaries convention in Winnipeg.

Crandall Community Notices and Local Honors

The district mourns with Mr. and Mrs. James Carnegie on the loss of their daughter Betty Jean and extends sympathy to the Douglas and Carnegie grandparents. Local cyclist injures arm in fall on south hill

Donna Lynne Leland broke her left arm when she fell from her bike while cycling down the south hill. In a scarce year Holy Trinity Harvest Thanksgiving on Sept. 24 drew strong giving and attendance. Rev. L Gedge preached and Linda Leland played organ. Evensong followed with a social hour. Mrs J Wiens hosted a CGLT gathering last Wednesday when weather prevented their planned Wiener roast, resulting in a pleasant party.

Miniota 4-H Sewing Club Holds First Regular Meeting

The Miniota 4-H Sewing Club met on September 22 with Mrs. Les Bryant providing lunch for Sharon Bryant for her birthday. Donna Lynn Leland joined in the birthday song, and Mrs Blaich presented slides from a trip to Alberta, which impressed attendees.

September 23 Wedding Shower for Sharlene Morison

Miss Elaine Morison of Portage assisted Sharlene upstairs where wedding gifts were on display. Berle Smith of Brandon organized shower gifts, Mrs Bud Amy of Winnipeg handled the guest book, and Mrs J Smith of Hamiota poured tea with help from Mrs E Smith of Oakner and Mrs J Morison of Pope. Serviteurs included Buda Dibblee Sharon Rudd Marlene Smith and Lawrie Johnston. Kitchen help came from Mrs Rud Mrs Amy Mrs Angus and Mrs Shoemaker.

Miniota Council Holds September 1961 Meeting

The R M of Miniota held a general meeting September 26 1961 at Municipal Hall with all members present Reeve H S Hyndman presiding Minutes from August 14 1961 were adopted A barrage of letters was noted including Manitoba Telephone System removal of poles and a fire in Twp 15 Age 27. Three appeals to reduce assessments were approved and the 1961 assessment rolls finalized for 1962 An Arnold House sale was approved for 50 with move and site clearance. By Law No 1425 passed and accounts totaling 10741 70 were paid.

Crandall church parlours hosted a miscellaneous shower for Glenda Smith bride elect of October 7. Guests included her mother Mrs. Herb Smith and future mother in law Mrs. T. Betty Jean Carnegie Enters Into Rest

Betty Jean Carnegie died at 1 year 4 months and was laid to rest at Arrow River Cemetery on Tuesday September 26, 1961. Rev C Geddes led the service at the church and graveside. Pallbearers included Joe Bonner Jack Morrow Vernon Lockhart and Ford Wiggins. Attending from afar were many Carnegies and friends from The Pas Calgary Roblin Brandon Rivers and other communities. Floral tributes reflected kindly sympathy.

Lydia McLain Conway Dies at 92 in Winnipeg

Lydia McLain Conway 92 of Winnipeg and Miniota dies September 20 1961 after brief illness at Victoria Hospital Winnipeg. Funeral at United Church Miniota officiated by Rev C A Geddes. Survived by daughter Dr Myrtle Conway of Winnipeg son Dr Clifford Conway of Victoria BC two grandchildren three great grandchildren.
