Irrigation scheme expands hay farming in Saskatchewan

The Saskatchewan Department of Agriculture completed a modern irrigation system on land once targeted by James Spangler, now used by 28 local farmers to grow hay for winter feed. Spangler began work in 1909, with engineers later following his route to create a 1028 acre project including 18 miles of supply laterals and seven miles of drains. The Lodge Creek Water User's Association leases plots from the province for three dollars per acre yearly, enabling farmers to control water and boost production amid dry summers.
