Forage Seed Deadline and Nitrogen Tips for Farms

The Forage Seed order deadline is November 12 and purchasers must sign a form not to apply for the forage incentive program. The provincial Soil Analysis Service reports 75 percent of 630 stubble fields tested between September 15 and October 25 are very low in nitrogen, up from 65 percent last year. Fehr cites crop uptake as a cause and recommends 40 to 60 pounds of actual nitrogen for cereals, while other fields may need 0 to 40 pounds. Phosphorus recommendations align with last year, with thirds needing 40 pounds, 25 to 30 pounds, and 10 to 25 pounds of P2O5. Farmers should dry samples before sending them to the lab to ensure accuracy and quicker results. The author plans to be in the area until late November and urges contacting the office for future Agricultural Representative services, listing available dates November 8, 18, 21, 23, and 24.
