First Birdtail Arts Festival Draws 530 Entries Across Communities
The Birdtail River Fine Arts Festival attracted 530 entries with participants from Birtle Selsgirth Shoal Lake Strathclair Newdale Cardale Oak River Rivers McConnell Decker Isabella Crandall Arrow River Miniota Kenton Harding Noronha and Hamiota. Wendy Harrison of Hamiota won the Gladys Fraser trophy for girls vocal solo 16 and under. Judges pooled prizes across school choirs violin piano spoken poetry and choral reading with winners in towns including Isabella Hamiota Solsgirth Birtle Kenton Shoal Lake and Arrow River. Catherine Koch Wins Third in International Humane Poster Contest
Miss Catherine Koch earned third prize and a certificate of merit in the International Humane Poster Contest sponsored by the Latham Foundation in Stanford California. The event drew 31 000 entries from 21 countries. Her sister Marilyn also won a certificate of merit for her entry. Miss Koch recently earned a Diploma of Graduation from the Minneapolis Art Instruction School with marks of 91 and 85.

Mrs Violet Foxton Dies After Long Illness
Mrs Violet Mavis Foxton of Dartmouth Nova Scotia died May 10 at Victoria General Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was born in Waterville Maine to Mrs Martha Henderson and the late Alex Henderson of Moncton New Brunswick. Survived by husband William and daughter Donna. her mother and sister Doris Smith of Moncton. brothers Percy Henry Leonard in Sudbury Ontario and Sandford in Moncton. a late brother James killed in Italy 1944. Funeral by Mattatalls Funeral Home at South End Baptist Church May 12 with Rev J W Scott. interment at Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.

Miniota C.G.I.T. Meeting Highlights May 23
The Miniota C.G.I.T. final meeting of the season was held May 23 in the church school room. Girls heard a northern Indian pen pal letter and viewed slides about home and school life. Camps at Wasaga will include Barbara Craig Linda Goodwin Shona Leland and Patsy Wiens. Gifts were planned for Holy Trinity and the United Church. A June field trip to Birtle Indian School is anticipated.

Birds Tail River Track Meet Dominates for Birtle Students
At the Birdtail River Track and Field Meet in Birtle on May 19 Cran dall led 31 local students to 3.21 points per pupil, besting Miniota. Pat Amy and Maxine Walker starred in girls events, with multiple top finishes including throws, sprints, and distances. In boys events Ken Smith Ron Rudd Don Kitz and others claimed several wins and podiums across sprints middle distances throws and jumps.

Birdtail Division Tournament Fires Up With Softball And Hardball
Ten softball teams and eight hardball teams attended the Birdtail Division Ball Tournament at Crandall on May 21. Ham iota won the hardball title by beating Crandall 2 to 1 in extra innings. The girls sprinted to a comeback win over Beulah 7-6 and over Kenton 12-9 before crushing Miniota 16-0 in the final.
