The Evans study for the National Committee on Economy in Public Finance shows total taxes levied by Dominion, provincial, and municipal governments climbing from 55.0 million in 1895 96 to 772.9 million in 1929 30. Per family taxes grew from 144.14 in 1913 14 to 259.10 in 1929 80, based on 1921 census family size of 4.62. The rise outpaced industrial and financial development.
