Seed treatments urged for rapeseed over blackleg spread
Manitoba farmers should inoculate rapeseed with Ben Ling seed treatment to guard against blackleg. The virulent strain spread from Melfort Saskatchewan to northeastern Saskatchewan and has appeared in two Melfort fields, reducing potential yields by 75 percent. No Manitoba or Alberta cases yet. Blackleg is seedborne. Ben Ling mixes with seed at three parts per 100. A resistant variety is not yet available, so precautions are essential for near infected areas.
