Soil losses under cultivation threaten prairie fertility
The University of Alberta study across 32 sites in Saskatchewan and Alberta shows black soils losing 18 percent nitrogen and 21 percent organic matter, dark brown 22 percent nitrogen and 26 percent organic matter, brown 20 percent nitrogen and 27 percent organic matter, and gray 35 percent nitrogen and 42 percent organic matter in the top six inches. Subsoil nitrogen loss is slight, but organic matter loss is substantial. The authors warn that the straight grain and fallow system fails to maintain soil nutrients in western Canada.
