Irrigation Boosts Saskatchewan Livestock and Wheat Economy
In the debate over the South Saskatchewan river project Senator Reid argues irrigation mainly shifts farming from grains to fodder and meat. Saskatchewan already has 209000 acres under the ditch and livestock earnings now rival wheat sales, with $120 million from livestock versus $242 million from wheat. The irrigation supports fodder supply, reduces drought risk, and strengthens the province’s cattle herd and overall rural confidence.
