Zenith Line to Tie In MLA s with Constituents

Manitobans may call their MLAs toll free via Zenith numbers starting June 23 for a 90 day trial. Each MLA provides a number to Manitoba Telephone System. constituents dial Zenith 3 7800 and the operator connects toll free to the MLA’s designated line. The province will absorb costs and a post-trial report will assess usage, cost, acceptance, and suitability.

Measure Would Require Land Holding Disclosure

Winnipeg Ontarioing government moves to strengthen the Farm Land Protection Act by requiring district land titles registrars to obtain and verify declarations of land holdings for transfers to curb foreign and nonresident ownership of Manitoba farm land. Exemptions include mines minerals crown bodies municipalities and school or hospital districts.

Health Centre Expansion Plans Discuss Funding and Costs

Manitoba Health Services Commission and CMHC representatives met with the Health Centre Planning Committee to review expansion, funding, and design. The project includes 15 elderly housing units at about 20 000 per unit and 30 bed personal care accommodation at about 23 000 per bed, with rent around 200 monthly and a 25 percent potential rent subsidy from Manitoba Housing.

Hamiota Recreation Programs and Lawn Bowling Events

The Midwest Recreation District reports upcoming lawn bowling for seniors at Hamiota Park on Tuesday June 28 1977 from 6 to 9 pm with lunch after games. Also noted are a gym night at Hamiota Collegiate for 50 60 children ages 3 to 14, supervised by Dale McKinnon, and Oak River Lawn Bowling Club starting summer play twice weekly. The Miniota Rocking Horse Rodeo on June 18 featured 40 to 50 children with relays races and bean bag tosses organized by Caroline Heise.

Manitoba to Raise Marriage Licence Fee to Ten Dollars

Health minister Laurent Desjardins announced Manitoba will hike the marriage licence fee from five to ten dollars effective July 1. The increase, the first since 1923, aligns Manitoba with five other provinces and distributes seven dollars to the province and three to private issuers when applicable. Desjardins argues higher fees will revive inactive private issuers and expand departmental licensing in social services offices, noting 7,574 licences issued in 1976 with revenue of 34,243 dollars split between provincial offices and private issuers.

Winnipeg Bill Aims to Boost Surviving Spouse Estate

A Manitoba bill would raise the basic estate for a surviving spouse from 10 000 to 50 000 and grant half of any amount beyond 50 000, regardless of children. It would also nullify any bequests to a divorced spouse, and adjust related marital property provisions as described by Attorney Pawley.
