Sunday rain measured 89 inches with a trace of hail. Harper Construction Co Winnipeg dismantles a grain elevator near the CP depot to make way for a new modern elevator at the east side. Jack Cook of Oliver Implement Co ill in Gainsboro hospital with a ruptured ulcer and blood transfusion required. He improves but stays ten days. Large crowd attends Joe Deere show sponsored by Johnson Bros at Centre featuring farm mechanics films and a comedy. Minsota United WMS meets at Mrs G Long’s and reports on Manitoba Women’s Assoc inaugural in Winnipeg. A six member sketch A Dearth in the Land and a solo by Mrs Miller. Lunch served by Mrs W E McDonald. Community Centre crowd for Family Party by Tom Andrushuk at International Harvester Co agent. Film on Grey Owl Beaver Valley and vaudeville with Joyce Anderson, Johnny Bower, Ross and Ross, Betty Gorham, Ray Conlin. Mrs T Gilchrist hospitalized. Mrs A Spalding attends Manitoba Northwestern Ontario Festival ArrA Council in Winnipeg. Mrs Conway fractures wrist and returns to Winnipeg for treatment.
A special Rural Council meeting on June 10 with full attendance and Reeve presiding addressed drainage and highway issues. They ask the Department of Public Works to survey drainage ditches on Birtle Virden Highway area and authorize purchase of a Smith Dozer from Kane Equipment Ltd with old unit traded in. Reeve Hyndman and Councillors Hawes and Spalding are delegated to discuss financing and completion of the Birtle Virden Highway project.
Council discusses completing its highway share on Virden Birtle road this year and charging outsiders for grave work from municipal pits. It sets Patrol rates for ward labor and requests CN R action on culvert rights. By laws 1193 and 1194 authorize sale and transfer of land and lots to named buyers. all councillors present.
Mr. and Mrs. A. Spencer, Sr. of Calgary visited with friends in town and around, en route to Winnipeg. W.L Hodnett returned from Calgary with them. Mr. and Mrs. W. Moehrke and children and R. Jensen of Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Len. Fisher and son, Winnipeg, are visiting at the W. H. Hurlin home.
