Maple Creek Hatchery Drives Local Poultry Output

The Maple Creek Hatchery owned by John W. Humphries is a quiet but busy regional producer supplying chicks and turkey poults to farmers in southwestern Saskatchewan. Since purchasing the business in 1945 from D. G. Lobb, turnover has grown from about 10 000 chicks to an annual output expected at 60 000 chicks and 5 000 turkey poults this year. The incubator capacity stands at 28 000 chicks and 6 000 poults, with feeding capacity for 10 000 chicks. About half of the chicks are kept on feed for three weeks before pickup, and peak production supports a four-person staff. The hatchery also sells poultry and livestock feeds, equipment, and veterinary supplies.
