Experiments at the Scott Experimental Farm show Canada thistle seeds mature in 12 to 14 weeks with a vigorous root system. By week three the main tap root and eight inch lateral roots form four leaves. by week seven new shoots appear up to thirteen inches from the parent, and at maturity the main root reaches four feet with lateral roots over two hundred inches, producing seeds and many new plants.
Canada Department of Agriculture studies at Brandon Manitoba and Harrow Ontario show restricted feed for pullets from 12 to 21 weeks yields higher profits and lower mortality. At Brandon Dr J H Stain reports 20 to 30 cent more per bird with improved disease resistance. at Harrow W F Mountain notes 83 cent revenue gain per bird over six years and lower hen house mortality with limited feeding.
